Do I have to buy an ironing board?

I've been informed that when DD starts secondary school I should iron her shirts. I have zero space in my tiny house for an ironing board. Are there any space saving ideas? Do I really need to get one?

For those that have the non iron shirts, do you tumble dry them or hang to dry?

I just bought a hand held clothes steamer and it's brilliant.

Works really well on DD school shirts although they don't really need ironing I was just testing it out. Just buy M&S or JL shirts they never need ironing

Works on sheets which I just hang over the door

I got this one. It even comes with attachments and a press pad which I don't really use as I just stretch the item out as I steam it

I chose this one instead of a smaller portable one. For the price point its excellent

If you actually need to iron I would recommend a table top one
or one that folds very flat
depends on her uniform - and how you dry it after washing really

PocketfulOfMiracles · 16/05/2023 12:12

I only iron formal shirts, the rest get shaken out of the dryer and are uncreased.
That said, I absolutely covet the little Joseph Joseph one and it's no use to me as my iron is a steam generator and wont fit #firstworldproblems 😂

You harridans, wait till I tell my 85yr old mum. She irons everything - sheets, teatowels, knickers - you are all morally bankrupt in her eyes and will go to hell.

cocksstrideintheevening · 16/05/2023 13:16

God no. I don't even have an iron never mind a board.

Definitely not tumble. Shake and smooth as soon as the machine finishes, hang on a hangar to dry

bananaboats · 16/05/2023 13:20

I don't iron anything but if I really must its a towel on the dining table here too. Don't have a tumble drier just hang things to dry flat straight out of the machine

bettytaghetti · 16/05/2023 13:20

Do you need to get an ironing board? No, only because it will disappear into a blackhole and you will never find it and will end up posting on here for help in finding it! 😂
Still need to know if that poster ever solved the mystery of her missing ironing board!

Malarandras · 16/05/2023 13:22

There is no need to iron. I’ve lived my whole life, with two kids at school, and have never ironed. They look just as smart as anyone else and nobody knows. And I waste zero time ironing!

Everydayimhuffling · 16/05/2023 13:23

OP, I'm a secondary school teacher: I've never ever noticed a child's shirt being un-ironed. My only concern would be if it was dirty or smelly, or really didn't fit. That said, polo shirts won't be part of the uniform most places. You will need proper shirts, but easy iron should be fine and hanging them up wet or damp is enough. I don't iron my work shirts, just choose ones that don't need ironing.

purplecorkheart · 16/05/2023 13:29

Get the non iron shirts, they will mainly be hidden under jumper or blazer. Wash and then hang to dry. Worse comes to worse you can always use a hairstraighter for collar but it probably will not need it.

M& S non-iron solo shirts
strict school, with ties, blazer etc. Perfectly smart, def don’t need to iron

They 100% do. Even fresh out of the drier they don't look great.

howhotisthedesert · 16/05/2023 13:37

My grandparents never had an ironing board! They would put a folded blanket on the kitchen table with a clean sheet on top. I hated if I ever needed to iron anything there as I couldn't figure out how to do little bits like collars, yokes and cuffs. Yet my grandad always managed to look like a fashion plate after he ironed his gear. Couldn't understand how he did it, but clearly it's possible!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/05/2023 13:37

Just hang them up straight from the dryer they'll be fine. I certainly don't plan on ironing dds shirts when she starts secondary in september, but that's because I'm assuming they won't be creased if hung straight from the dryer.

I might end up having to, but we will see.

Table top with a towel on is fine.

hotdiggetydog · 16/05/2023 13:41

You can get great hand held steamers for less than 20. Absolutely brilliant bits of kit

MagpiePi · 16/05/2023 13:46

I didn’t iron any of DS’s school shirts.

I showed him how to do it and let him get on with it.

I've got a George steamer from Asda that cost £20, it's great and my work tops come up lovely.

There’s your mistake - don’t put them in the dryer! They get ‘over dry’ (?)

Best thing is to shake them out, put them on a coat hanger, then dry naturally preferably outside

LouLou198 · 17/05/2023 22:54

Wash dry and hang up - no need to iron!
Crease release spray if absolutely necessary.

NotMeSecretFormular · 17/05/2023 23:48

Mine is on a hook on the wall right behind the kitchen bin. Takes up no additional space. I don’t iron anything of mine, but do iron DD's clothes within reason.
Shirts do need ironing, even fresh out of the tumble. She's had proper shirts all through primary (bastards) and due to start secondary in September. I was ridiculed in secondary for not blow drying my hair, constantly creased shirts would've made me an even easier target.
