If you are from a MC upbringing, do you eat a full English breakfast?

Thinking if out for for breakfast in a cafe or restaurant? Or is the old sausages, bacon, beans thing a WC thing?

The 'Full English' is a take on the Edwardian country house breakfast, served from chafing dishes on the sideboard, where you'd have eggs, bacon, sausages etc and also smoked haddock or kedgeree and other delights.

Everybody else was breakfasting on bread and tea.

I love a proper breakfast if we're away and going out for the day. DH has fruit and yoghurt, same as at home, and starts asking for cake about 1am!

TinySaltLick · 15/05/2023 09:09

I would have to go back to bed afterwards

What is it about a lot of MNers who are fucking obsessed with the idea of class and enforcing class divides, attributing everything from what you eat for breakfast to how you tie your shoes with your so called class.

Yes. the class obsession on MN is so real.

'Do you tie your shoelaces in a working class or middle class manner?'

ZoraMipha · 15/05/2023 09:11

I don't think this has much to do with class. Lots of people like a cooked breakfast, lots aren't bothered.

Treeonahill · 15/05/2023 09:06

@Sissynova its generally new and not established MC that obsesses about class. My first degree was sociology, love a bit of a social habits discussion. They are basically incredibly insecure. My family are immigrants so I see it without having personal hang ups.

My family were immigrants and my mother was obsessed with class. I think because of exactly what you said - new and not established. It used to really irritate me. But it definitely got in there somewhere because I often don’t feel comfortable around people who had an upbringing like my DH (v privileged) except I obviously do feel very comfortable around my DH! 😁

SpecialControlGroup · 15/05/2023 09:11

If I fancy one. I can't for a second see how class dictates what you eat for breakfast though

JazbayGrapes · 15/05/2023 09:11

I love a full English in hotels or restaurants

Usernamen · 15/05/2023 09:12

A cooked breakfast every day or even regularly is very unhealthy!

MisschiefMaker · 15/05/2023 09:13

Grew up on the wealthier side of MC and my DM would make us an English breakfast every Sunday.

As an adult I prefer eggs Benedict but would definitely have an English breakfast from time to time.

Sadly DD is very allergic to eggs so eggy breakfasts are a thing of the past now.

I had a week at a lovely hotel in Devon last month. They did a superb full English and I indulged every day.

Booklover40 · 15/05/2023 09:13

Seems weird to claim it as English by default.

It's not weird at all. It's like saying you're going for an Indian when you go for a curry. Most places now call it whatever country they're in anyway so "full Irish" in Ireland etc. Most places have slight variations depending on where they are I.e. you often get little cooked potatoes in Ireland or some haggis or "tattie scones" in Scotland.

Davros · 15/05/2023 09:14

I love a full English if I go out, sometimes at home. I prefer good quality ingredients but will eat cheap shite too. Definitely MC but both parents were WC. I call myself "mixed class"!

GodSaveTheClean · 15/05/2023 09:14

I would probably choose eggs Benedict or avocado/mushrooms on toast if we were breakfasting out and it was an option. DC love one though!

I haven’t taken the exam though so no idea which class I’ve been assigned to.

MC here and would never touch it. Grease - yuck.

😂

The term fry up is a bit misleading.

I make DH scrambled eggs, the hash browns, sausages and bacon are all cooked in the oven.
It's not greasy

FlounderingFruitcake · 15/05/2023 09:15

Personally I’m a pescatarian so wouldn’t eat one but I really don’t get how it’s a class thing. A full English, or cooked breakfast variant of, will be on the menu at just about anywhere that does breakfast in the UK whether that’s a 5 star hotel or greasy spoon.

5128gap · 15/05/2023 09:16

I was brought up WC and still am. I eat a whole food vegan diet that regularly includes all sorts of things I'm not entitled to as a WC person. What I do is, I put on a special posh voice and use some big words when I'm ordering. As long as I can remember to use my cutlery the right way round and not use the word serviette, I think I get away with it.

Is it? Are carb laden and sugar loaded cereals/muesli/granola etc so much better for you than meat and eggs?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/05/2023 09:20

Rarely at home, unless we have guests, but if staying in a hotel where it’s an option (and someone else is cooking!) I do enjoy a full English*. Not that we ever called it that when I was a child - it was a ‘cooked breakfast’ and usually only at weekends.
*Except for black pudding, 🤮, and the white pudding we were also offered with an Irish breakfast in Limerick.
My DF liked kidneys with his FE - another 🤮- they smelt of wee while being fried.

You get to enjoy the pescatarian classic that is kippers. A classic English breakfast that has been out of fashion for a long time now, so probably ripe for a hipster comeback.

Surely one’s lady’s maid ties one’s shoelaces.

ShimmeringShirts · 15/05/2023 09:22

A full English is enjoyed by everyone from WC to UC, OP Confused

Bluemuf · 15/05/2023 09:23

If I go out for breakfast (any meal) I usually pick something I wouldn't make at home, so eggs benedict or similar.

I sometimes cook breakfast, but it would be pared down somewhat, probably eggs, bacon, mushrooms.

If I'm away in a hotel I have the works on the first morning and then start looking for healthier options.

I've no idea what class I am.

Comedycook · 15/05/2023 09:19

Red and processed meats (ie bacon and sausage) are carcinogens. And not all cereals have added sugar.

ShimmeringShirts · 15/05/2023 09:23

@Comedycook I’m assuming the PP meant a fry up as a breakfast, where I’m from it’s just called a cooked breakfast not a full English etc.

Couldyounot · 15/05/2023 09:26

It's food. Where does class come into it?
