Travelling with children who aren’t dry at night

We are going away next week to Florida and it is our very first time going over there since lockdown. I am really looking forward to seeing some of our family and to be away. My main concern is the kids on the plane, both my daughter and my son aren’t dry at night and still wear pull ups/nappies. The flight time from memory is about 8/9 hours and i’m worried if the kids go to sleep they might have an accident.

Is it worth popping their pj’s and pull ups on before we get on the flight or AIBU?

Sounds sensible

DustyLee123 · 15/05/2023 08:00

Yes, that’s what I did.

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 15/05/2023 08:00

Yes definitely do this. When mine were little I always put them in PJs and pull ups for a night flight. It won't look odd, kids in PJs are a pretty common sight at airports.

Yes, children wear nappies on planes.

That’s what I thought, it would be less confusing for them as well.

Way home presumably it’s a night flight so obviously yes PJs and pull up.

Are you debating over the flight out which is during the day? How old are the children and what time is the flight? Toddlers that are likely to fall asleep definitely a pull up but if you flight is at midday or something and DC are older and are unlikely to sleep then I probably wouldn’t bother but would have in hand luggage in case of delay and they started to get tired.

Way home is a night flight so both will definitely be wearing. My daughter is 3 and my son is 5, the flight out is in the morning and we would have had an early start which makes me think they will fall asleep. DH wants to leave the house at about 3am because of the drive and parking etc.

Either pull ups and nappies or some nice comfy joggers

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 15/05/2023 08:13

Definitely. My 8 year old still had the occasional wet bed. On long haul trips he puts one on in the toilet after the meal service and then removes before leaving the plane. Don’t think he’s ever actually used it but it’s not worth the risk of a wet seat!

It’s more peace of mind as I would hate for them to have an accident and get upset and be stuck with a wet seat for the remainder of the flight.

What time is the flight and how far is the airport? We've used airport hotels several times for the early morning flights.

ANewAdventure · 15/05/2023 08:15

Yes, we put pull ups (“special plane pants” if necessary, I bought the patterned ones for bribery purposes!) on for long haul plane journeys, day and night. Figured there’s often fairly long periods where you can’t access the toilet, as well as general night dryness, change of routine, over excitement, etc etc.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 15/05/2023 08:15

Exactly. Also in case of situations where they are desperate and the seat belt sign is on. Far less stress.

Flight is at 9, the airport is about 2.5hrs away and we need to get there 3hrs before for security etc. Hotel is good idea, I might have a look to see what the prices are like.

I think it would be advisable for people to avoid telling about their own children wearing nappies on planes. There is a troll who specialises in that subject.

DogsAndBirds · 15/05/2023 08:23

I'd have thought it sensible - there is often a queue for the toilet on the plane or it can be difficult to get down the aisle at meal times etc due to the cart. Far better to be prepared incase you can't get to the toilet quickly regardless of not being dry at night

gogohmm · 15/05/2023 08:29

Pull up and leggings or joggers for day flight, repeat or pj's for return

BananaMamaa · 15/05/2023 08:31

Thanks everyone, think I will do as suggested

Just take pull-ups for the plane. A dd did not long ago for a long night flight, for a Gds who still wears them at night. No problem.

SparklyBlackKitten · 15/05/2023 09:03

If your kids still pee their pants: You put them in nappies of course. You dont want to risk any accidents happening....

ilovewispas · 15/05/2023 12:28

I am just being grumpy or is this really a non question?

If your kids wee in their sleep and they might be going to sleep, put whatever you use at home on them.

44PumpLane · 15/05/2023 13:09

As an aside OP, if you are doing hire car and car seat rental, I'd suggest taking some puppy training pads from Home Bargains with you.....that way if anyone falls asleep in the car on the way home from a day at the parks and has a bit of a leak then your car seats are protected!

Also useful for putting under the bed sheet in case of leaks.

BeCleverGreenQuail · 10/03/2025 22:47

My son is 14 and he still wears nappies on long car trips or flights.
