Paracetamol

Listening to R4 show that said paracetamol is widely used but largely ineffective for many people.
Ditto aspirin and ibuprofen.
Triggered by a bored day in bed with a migraine brought on by a long walk this am - an Aibu

YABU - Paracetamol works for me
YANBU - Paracetamol doesn't work for me

Sorry to hear you have a migraine, I hope you feel better soon Flowers

I suffer with tension headaches and sometimes migraines. Paracetamol works about half the time for me, but I often have to rotate it with ibroprofen. Ibroprofen works better for me, but I have to be careful taking it and only take sparingly as it causes me stomach problems. Cocodamol, or at least the dose you can get over the counter, is also not very effective in my experience.

I find what helps is:
Taking painkillers early on, don't let pain set in
a hot water bottle on the back of my neck and
Using a neck shoulder massager

Would love to find an alternative to ibroprofen that doesn't harm your stomach.

HisHobbyIsSex · 14/05/2023 18:44

Thank you!
A shoulder massage would be amazing!

The only time paracetamol helps me is as part of the strong dosage cocodamol. It's a waste of time on its own

BumWad · 14/05/2023 18:47

Paracetamol definitely works for me

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 14/05/2023 18:48

Paracetamol only helps ease cold-like symptoms for me. For pain (like a headache or period pain) it has to be ibuprofen. I'm allergic to aspirin.

VariationsonaTheme · 14/05/2023 18:49

Depends what pain you’re trying to get rid of, as to whether paracetamol will work or not. It’s extremely effective for some types/causes and not so much others, so I’m not surprised there are mixed reports in a random study.

Xrays · 14/05/2023 18:51

I take paracetamol alongside Tramadol for severe lupus related pain and sometimes I actually find the paracetamol works better on it’s own 😳

greenacrylicpaint · 14/05/2023 18:55

hope you feel better soon.

with over the counter pain relief it's a bit of trial and error what works for you.
for me I have found that either ibuprofen or oaracetamol don't do much for me, but taking one tablet of each together does.

Pashazade · 14/05/2023 18:57

Good for colds useless for pain management unless it's intravenous, in which case it seems to work marvellously!

AndTheSurveySays · 14/05/2023 18:59

Paracetamol works for me for most things.
Strangely, morphine and tramadol have no pain killing effect but just make me feel incredibly unwell (discovered only when I'd had major surgery).

HabitatRat · 14/05/2023 19:06

Paracetamol works for me but only if it has caffeine

ShakeYourFeathers · 14/05/2023 19:09

Paracetamol rarely does it for me

Tend to use ibruprofen and if pain is really bad then use paracetamol

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/05/2023 19:10

As I can't have NSAIDs due to allergies and I get irritated by the inconvenience of having to tail off codeine (prescribed it for years for flares, very glad to be in receipt of a biologic now so I don't need to be on it), and detested Tramadol with every fibre of my being, I found that actually, paracetamol is pretty bloody amazing medication.

Most things are tackled in multiple modalities -

Sinus pain - decongestant, paracetamol, coffee, cold pack on face, saline rinse.

Cervicogenic headaches - paracetamol, cold packs on face, neck and head, ergonomic pillow, exercises to strengthen and lengthen neck (many pops and cracks as it frees off), massage (and associated swearing).

Injury - cold packs, bandage or tape, paracetamol, elevation and gentle mobilisation.

Toothache - paracetamol, saline, good hygiene and a trip to the dentist.

Unfortunately, I have experience of people who insist that paracetamol 'does nothing' and the ones I have encountered are all people who will never do anything to help that isn't taking a magic pill and expecting it to all go away in a cosy, warm fug - it was usually followed by 'you've got some codeine, haven't you?'. No, I fucking well don't. Piss off and seek your narcotics elsewhere, mother/now an ex/friend of gossipy woman collecting her prescription at the same time as me pestering me in the school playground at pick up time.

WonderingWanda · 14/05/2023 19:10

Works for headaches, period pains, fever and flu like ache and pains bit no good for muscular aches and pains.

Ponoka7 · 14/05/2023 19:12

It's annoying when you are handed two for the after pains post childbirth. I was glad they were short staffed so I could have a little go on the gas and air.

Just coming to say the same, I had it via IV in hospital when I was pregnant and I couldn't get over how well it worked when normally I find it shite 😂

knittingaddict · 14/05/2023 19:15

Headaches and pain = works.
Migraine = doesn't work.

Pashazade · 14/05/2023 19:22

I'm afraid I got rather shirty with the nurse who tried to persuade me that two paracetamol was sufficient pain killer less than 24 hours after having given birth and having had stitches. I got oramorph for my first walk to the shower!
I'm assuming the OP listened to this it was very interesting.

I find it really good although codeine does nothing for me except make me feel hungover weirdly

Whydotheyallhaverubbishwheels · 14/05/2023 19:24

I find it mad they send you home from a c section with paracetamol and ibuprofen. I got stuck in bed due to the pain and these doing sweet fa!

RightWhereYouLeftMe · 14/05/2023 19:27

Paracetamol works for my bad headaches if taken at the first sign. Nothing helps if I take it too late. It also doesn't work if I have bad sinus pain from a cold.

Paracetamol definitely works for my period pain, and helped with pain from stitches etc after giving birth.

Sissynova · 14/05/2023 19:28

I almost never take painkillers, I’ve just never really noticed a difference when I’ve taken them so it doesn’t seem worth it.

eyesfullofstars · 14/05/2023 19:30

Paracetamol works well for me for things like headaches, period pains and fever. Ibuprofen seems better for things like back pain. Neither would work for a migraine for me but triptans fortunately do. Codeine just makes me feel like shit.

They don’t even send you home with it! They just advise you to take it at home.
I came home after just moving house so had no supply of painkillers and was in so much pain I needed to take max dose of both for a few weeks. I don’t even know if it helped as I was still in agony but my mum had to beg the pharmacist to sell her more than 1 pack each or I would have needed to drag myself to the chemist every 2 or 3 days when I could barely move.
