Horse and cars

I drove too fast through the village. It was more than 20 miles an hour. Which is the limit? Someone on a horse was coming the other way and I slowed down. She shouted at me for speeding and I took a photograph of my car admit I was speeding, and I’m very sorry for that, but am I being unreasonable that she took a photograph of me, feels an invasion?

The speed limit is whatever the sign says it is. Could be 20, 30 or 40.

Unless there was a speed camera there is no evidence to the speed.

Be more aware of your driving.

Fiddlerdragon · 14/05/2023 17:18

How can we tell you what the limit was? What did the signs say? If you feel you were driving too fast then you probably were and shouldn’t be behind the wheel tbh

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 14/05/2023 17:20

Legally, she is allowed to take a photograph of your car on a public road, and she may pass this on to the police. There will likely be no action taken, because a still photograph won't prove the speed.

She probably felt under threat with you speeding towards her. Did you slow down to 10mph to pass the horse?

Pixiedust1234 · 14/05/2023 17:23

Did she take the photo because you were speeding or because you werent driving with due care and attention (or whatever the correct term is for not driving carefully)? You have to slow right down when there are horses as it can be dangerous to everyone around you. Actually not just slow down but provide enough room.

LBF2020 · 14/05/2023 17:26

According to the Highway Code you should pass a horse no faster than 10mph. You said you were going faster than 20mph but how much faster 30/40mph? How fast did you go past the horse?

countvoncount · 14/05/2023 17:26

Is your concern that you are about to be shamed on a social media village group?

She won't be able to record your speed or report speeding from a photo... As soon as I read this my immediate thoughts were she's going to post the photo to horse groups/local groups/her own profile on Facebook and whatever other social media she uses. That is quite common when it comes to dangerous driving around horses and I don't blame her.

Who took a photo?

Reverse?

Frabbits · 14/05/2023 17:35

You'll find there are these handy signs that tell you what the speed limit is. Try looking out for those.

But yeah, sounds like you were an arsehole.

Thanks for your comments, I came around a corner and they were right on the corner. I don’t mind being put on social media, just thought it was a bit unfair as I did slow down to almost a stop. I guess you would have to have been there to comment, I used to ride horses around the lanes so do understand the importance of slow speed and know that horses have the right of way, it was her immediate photo taking which I thought made her the arserhole!

So it seems you were driving too fast for the road conditions. What if it had been a child who ran out? Zero visibility and speed are a deadly mix.

SunnySaturdayMorning · 14/05/2023 17:50

YABU. Anyone can take a picture of you in a public place for whatever reason they want. They don’t need your permission.

And they can’t do whatever they want with it too.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 14/05/2023 17:53

She took a photo so she can report you to the police for driving dangerously around a horse.

You may well get a visit.

Many riders wear hat cameras for this reason and the police have a specific portal for uploading evidence of close/fast passes.

You should be doing no more than 10mph past a horse and should give at least 2m distance.

It is legal and above board to photograph you while you are on a public highway.

Still driving dangerously. You gave no thought to what could have been around the corner - what if you'd smashed into a broken down car? Posts like this are worrying as you genuinely don't seem to think not thinking ahead is a bad thing, or maybe you just don't see the need to do it. Jumping on the brake when confronted with the horse still isn't enough, as an ex-horse rider you should know that's still enough for the horse to possibky throw her and bolt.
No wonder there are so many completely avoidable incidents on our roads.

PrincessofWellies · 14/05/2023 20:08

There have been several deaths caused by drivers going round a bend speeding and running into the back of the horse.

I've been hit on a narrow road outside my own house where the car was driving so fast in a 30 mph limit they couldn't stop. Hit my leg as they tried to swerve and bounced off the opposite kerb.

It's fucking horrible. We try not to ride on the road but can't always avoid it.

missmollygreen · 14/05/2023 20:14

Cant have been going that fast if the horse rider had time to get their phone out, unlock it, open the camera and take an in focus picture of a car barreling towards them... unless this didnt really happen op?
