I can’t stand my neighbours

I’m trying to revise and all day they been making noise - it’s like the sounds of opening and closing drawers and like rolling marbles across the floor or scratching. They do this constantly all day.

It drives me insane. But how can you complain when it’s not noise like loud music.

I'd guess they have a pet and they're rolling a ball and the scratching is the claws of the pet as it scampers. Unfortunately unless pets are banned not much you can do. Unfortunately for you people with children or pets often choose laminate flooring over carpets which emphasises the sound.
Unless you're able to afford to move this all part and parcel of living in close proximity. Maybe see if you can work out their pattern/habits so you can choose best times to study and best times to run round with the hoover.

Could you wear noise cancelling headphones, or ear plugs, or go somewhere quiet like a library?

rainraingoawaay · 14/05/2023 16:27

Could it be a wheeled chair like a desk chair? Tbh it sounds like fairly normal neighbour noises, as PP said - headphones / library etc an option?

chezpopbang · 14/05/2023 16:42

If you can't stand neighbours making noise live somewhere you won't hear it. Like the top floor flat or a house. They are generally living in their house and it is unreasonable of you to expect them not to.

Pigstrotter · 14/05/2023 16:49

Go round & ask them what the noise is. Tell them you don’t want to fall out about it but it’s driving you mad. There’s nothing wrong with trying to distract yourself, but do not go to the library or walk about in your own home in headphones.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 14/05/2023 16:52

Might they have wooden/ laminate floors and if so check if that’s allowed in the lease?

Are you joking?

You’d contact their landlord about their flooring?😧

White Noise type interference. I’m partial to Rain Sounds

you do recognize this is like posting they are breathing too loud, right?

It’s not the noise it’s that it’s continuous, from 8am when I woke up to even now there’s been no break. It probably is their dog and it’s likely bored out of its brain.

Anyone would be ok with for example hearing a cupboard door bang but imagine if it was the same repetitive bang over and over and over for hours. People really wouldn’t find that annoying?

It really isn’t. I don’t care about general day to day noise, what’s driving me mad is the same noise never stopping for 9 hours straight.

If its continuous for that length of time then go ask them what it is and whether there is anything they can do, ie if its a fan next to the party wall could they move it to the other side of the room. Get them to come into your house so they can hear it too.

Treesoutsidemywindow · 14/05/2023 17:31

If you don't hear this every day OP, then I think I'd probably go and knock, explain that you've been hearing the same noise for '9 hours straight', and ask if they know what's causing it, and if it's something they can do something about, ie, if it's the dogs claws, they could get them clipped, or maybe put down some rugs. If it's an every day occurrence though, I think you'll have to use some ear plugs or headphones, but I'd still try and find out what it is, and explain that it's disturbing you, as if they don't know, they can't/won't do anything about it.

olympicsrock · 14/05/2023 17:33

I could not bear this either. Feel your pain.

sunshinesupermum · 14/05/2023 17:44

Go and speak to your neighbours.

It's usual in leasehold properties for the lease to contain clauses forbidding floors other than carpets in living areas and bedrooms. I would and it's entirely appropriate and reasonable to approach the landlord.
