Changing my mind on pet adoption last minute

hutse · 14/05/2023 12:45

Gave our name to a breeder. Pets are now ready to go. I'm all of a sudden realising the gravity of it after not giving it enough thought and I think it's just a bad idea for right now, however I feel like I might regret saying no, and more importantly feel really stupid for pursuing the idea and then changing my mind at the last second.

What to do?

Better to regret not getting the animal than to regret getting it IMO.

Let it go to a home that definitely is ready for it and wants it.

Astralitzia · 14/05/2023 12:51

If you're not sure it is better to back out. Any reputable breeder will understand and will be happy their animal is not going to someone who doesn't feel ready. Bear in mind you may lose your deposit.

Starlightstarbright1 · 14/05/2023 12:53

Absolutely back out . Don’t start with a pet you aren’t committed to

theTractorFactor · 14/05/2023 12:59

WAY more stressful for the pet to be returned to the breeder after three stressful months with someone who isn't completely committed. And if it's a decent breeder they'll have a waiting list so someone will get the phone call they've been hoping for.

Thoughtful2355 · 14/05/2023 13:15

I wouldn't have a dog anymore. Changed your life having pets. So much commitment

Grimbelina · 14/05/2023 13:19

Back out now!

2bazookas · 14/05/2023 13:51

Back out of the sale . You're not ready.

Think about it for another 6 months.

JMSA · 14/05/2023 15:52

Pet adoption? I'm not sure what you mean by that, as surely if you were buying a puppy you'd just say that.
Anyway, if it is a puppy sale, back out now. I adore our dog - he's 8 years old now - but the puppy stage nearly broke me.

JMSA · 14/05/2023 15:53

So if you're already unsure, you may find it doubly bad!

Seas164 · 14/05/2023 15:58

If you're not sure, absolutely don't do it. Getting a dog without fully understanding the commitment and work entailed is a very bad idea.

YarnySocksKnitter · 14/05/2023 16:11

Don't do it if you're not prepared.

And, tbh, a decent breeder would have picked up that you're not prepared and wouldn't sell you a puppy/kitten anyway, so might be sensible to swerve this breeder.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 14/05/2023 16:33

Been there. Just be honest.

3luckystars · 14/05/2023 16:35

Back out and tell the breeder no. It it doesn’t feel right, then it’s not right.

pecantoucan · 14/05/2023 16:38

Don't you think the dog deserves a home with someone who is 100% sure? This is a no brainer OP - you need to back out.

LovelyJublee · 14/05/2023 17:05

If you have doubts you shouldn't get any pet.

You used the term adoption in your title but then say you gave your name to a breeder which suggests it's a purchase of a pet rather than a rescue animal. Not that it matters, as the advice is the same regardless, a bunny from a breeder or a puppy from a rescue, don't do it because it's not fair on the animal.

Blancmangemouse · 14/05/2023 17:13

Agree with the advice - don’t do it OP.

Don't be embarrassed, there will be another home this puppy can go to. Yes you may lose your deposit, but you will save on pet food and vet bills and pet sitters for the next 10 years - stepping away is still the cheaper option even if you do lose some money up front.

Just tell the breeder you’ve had a change in circumstance and it’s no longer a good idea. They won’t push you - no decent breeder wants to send a puppy to a home that isn’t 100% set up for them. There will be a waiting list, they won’t be angry with you.

JudgeRudy · 14/05/2023 17:18

Back out. Bite the bullet and let people know. As soon as you've done it you will feel a stone lighter

LadyWithLapdog · 14/05/2023 17:46

It’s ok to back out. You aren’t ready now and need to rethink or ditch the idea.
