To think changing a rescue dog's name is fine?

DH is saying absolutely no, we keep the name. I personally don't see it as an issue if we make it somewhat similar sounding to a dog's ear. I'm just not a huge fan (dog is named Pluto) thought we could go for something with an o sound at the end still, with 2 syllables, plenty of names.

DH thinks it's mean when it's already a new everything for a dog and the least we can do is keep his name.

What do you think?

We changed one of ours. he was called Fred and had been terribly abused by his former owner so whenever you said 'fred' he wouold cower and wet himself. He became 'Shay' instead and it was all round better.

The dog won't care if you give him a new name. Watch any pet owner and they respond to generic names like Handsome Boys, Sweetie, Good Girl, Boo Boo, my Baby etc.
I took on a cat called Golly and morphed his name to Ollie in public. He'd have probably responded to Molly too.
Pluto could easily morph into Bruno say, but you could chose Rover if you wanted and im sure hed get it. Not sure why your husband seems so concerned about your dog having sone sort of identity crisis. Maybe appease your OH and give him a daft title...Sir Pluto Rover Eggington....then gradually call him Eggy (or whatever).

I think you are fine to change. He may have only been that for a few weeks at rescue. We kept ours because it was fine but he’d have been fine with a new one. It’s tone isn’t it? He answers to a variety of nicknames and the rustle of a biscuit packet.

I changed my dog's name (Jenson) - he did not notice.

I think dogs go by sound rather than anything so we also had a rescue and he came to us named Toby and we renamed him Cody which kinda sounded similar but different enough not to remind him of his 'abused' name. He has since passed away a happy dog but yes I agree you can change the name.
