To be worried about the nuclear situation ☢️

HonedInOn · 13/05/2023 20:59

I am absolutely terrified of what is going on in the world. We are currently risking global annihilation and extinction. Ukraine is at war with Russia and the UK is supplying arms. Effectively we are at war with Russia. UK bombs are killing Russian troops. I get why. But what a ridiculously tight rope to walk.

Whats more is I am really very worried about the rise of the ‘hacker’ - what is to stop
hackers and hacktivists from hacking into our nuclear weapons and launching or detonating where they stand?

The further into this year we get the further I start to realise we are to the brink of annihilation and it terrifies me and anyone I speak to about it.

Pretty sure the nukes won't be connected to the Internet.

An AI faking an order to launch a nuclear attack on the other hand.....

That’s exactly what I’m worried about, AI and hackers learning how to utilise our nuclear defence system and setting it off. This is not outside the realm of possibility. An AI might judge humanity as a negative (just like the people who glue themselves to the roads) and set off nukes. Many of these activists who could turn hacktivist believe the world is better without any humans at all.

I'm in my 60s and since I was a school child there has always been a threat hanging over us. At college I delivered leaflets for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. There have been gulf wars, Afghanistan, 9/11. All terrible and worrying but a)very little the ordinary person can do other than vote for the most sensible people you can and protest what you feel is wrong and b)get on with your life.

If I'd let all the threats to peace dominate my life and chase me into submission I'd have wasted the last 45 or so years. During my life I've lost dear friends at a young age. When I worry about the current situation I always think that those dear friends would be very happy to be here to have the chance to experience these times whether good or bad.

Stand away from the constant news feed and do something good and positive.

I get you, I sometimes worry if there could be another Chernobyl.

We can’t always help our low level anxieties.

mynameiscalypso · 13/05/2023 21:34

The National Cyber Security Centre is pretty good as far as government bodies go. I wish other parts of the security/law enforcement system were half as well resourced or good at what they do.

At least will take our mind off the COL crisis.

Very true😂

OP, so we really need to be spreading things like this that make people anxious? I think it's best to put something nice on to watch and calm down.

It's so predictable

So your answer is to accept

War is coming

and be done with it?? That doesn’t seem rational or in anyone’s best interests really

No, war is not coming, and even if it were, that would still be no excuse for dramatic spacing

gwenneh · 13/05/2023 21:40

It's not an automated system that can just be deployed.

This is getting so tedious. I'll be glad when Ukraine whips the last of those Russian asses right out of their country. That reminds me, is Putin dead yet? 🤔

I'm 64. Exactly this, above.

Not really.

If the Russians were capable of doing anything about it, they'd have done so by now. They haven't because they know they can't. Even assuming their nukes work, which isn't a given, they're not going to be stupid enough to aim them at us. They'd all be wiped out too. And they've no other way to stop us giving all the weapons we like to the Ukrainians.

And helping Ukraine is less risky for the UK than the alternative, because if Russia aren't stopped now then they'll do this again elsewhere.

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 14/05/2023 08:56

Yes, it's ok to worry about the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and there are groups (eg CND and the Campaign Against the Arms Trade) you could join/ support if you wanted to make a difference to the situation. The UK makes and sells a lot of arms/ defence equipment to other countries, and it'd be great to have more people involved in campaigning about that.
As well as the risk of someone like Putin using a nuclear weapon, there's also a very real risk of a catastrophic nuclear accident in this country being caused by our own systems of transporting warheads around on trucks (on motorways, with other traffic, through major cities like Glasgow). (It would also be pretty easy for a 'terrorist' group to target one of these convoys if they wanted to).

However YABU to suggest that the kind of 'extremist' group that 'glue themselves to roads' is going to take any action using nuclear weapons. Groups like Extinction Rebellion, Just Stop Oil, Insulate Britain etc are motivated by a desire to prevent ecological collapse and environmental damage, not cause more of it. I know that sections of the media and the police try to demonise environmental activists but can't believe you fell for it. The only 'extremists' likely to try and hack into weapons systems are far more likely to come from far-right and/or misogynist-'incel' backgrounds (the same kind of guys who go on shooting sprees etc)

Why don't you go and watch a nice 80s movie or two today?

You could start with War Games. Or The Terminator. Or Short Circuit.

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 14/05/2023 09:23

PS: There aren't 500k people "homeless on the streets"!
According to Shelter, on any one given night in England, there are likely to be around 2400 people sleeping rough.
There are far more homeless people (defined as all those who lack secure accommodation) in hostels and temporary accommodation (incl the 'hidden homeless' staying on friends' sofas etc), so not on the streets.
https://england.shelter.org.uk/media/press_release/at_least_271000_people_are_homeless_in_england_today
Scottish statistics at https://scotland.shelter.org.uk/housing_policy/homelessness_in_scotland

You say "Surely if our government was strong and all knowing this wouldn’t be the case?"

Unfortunately the Govt knows about homelessness, they just don't care about the people without homes (many of whom don't/can't vote, and most of whom would never vote Tory anyway).

Street homelessness had been on the wane under the previous Labour administration, but has shot up again since the Tories came to power. The current situation is caused by the near-disappearance of council housing for the vats majority of people, lack of social housing and secure tenancies, a system which rewards profiteering landlords at the expense of tenants and their health/well-being etc - all of which are the outcome of deliberate policy decisions.

No surprise, when you realise that a quarter of Tory MPs are private landlords themselves. It's estimated that MPs rake in at least £2m a year from this er side hustle.

Of course they're not "working on this", they're doing very nicely out of the way things are and they don't give a f* about those who aren't!

Homelessness in Scotland - Shelter Scotland

Too many people in Scotland are becoming homeless because of the housing emergency. In the year 2021/22 there were 35,230 homeless applications made to local authorities in Scotland. Of these, 28,882 households were assessed as being homeless or threat...

Yes, they seem to crop up whenever the Russian invading forces in Ukraine have had a particularly bad day.

The Russians must be using children or babushkas to do their propaganda now because the threads are getting more pathetic and amateurish. I suppose they've sent everyone else to the front 😂

YABU. Focus on your own life.

If you’re “seriously worried” about something you cannot control, you need to get help for your anxiety because it’s gone past the bounds of normal and healthy.

Yes a lot of the men are busy fertilising Ukrainian fields at the moment, so you have to take who you can get.

Cheezecake · 14/05/2023 12:09

Were you not around during the Cold War? Every day it was amazing we weren't dead yet. Now I just shrug my shoulders. There's nothing I can do about it, so I'll just keep going.

chickenandchops · 14/05/2023 12:41

I just hope it started with the Russians or Americans or British saying 'hey guys, we've got nuclear weapons so you better watch out', knowing full well they don't have anything. And then every other country was like 'yeah well we have 10 nuclear weapons' and then the others are like '10 pffft that's nothing we've got 10,000' and it's all just little boys telling eachother how many nunchucks and ninja stars and swords and armour they have at home and it turns out its plastic toys and a whole lot of Fakeness.

Anyone got any sources that support this? Even if they are as fake as the nunchucks

Well, Chemical Ali went on TV saying 'We have weapons of Mass Destruction and if you invade Iraq, we will use them' - and we all know what they didn't find once they were there.
