To worry about sepsis

TTCNumber3uk · 13/05/2023 19:13

I suffer badly with anxiety so apologies for the potentially silly question
Yesterday I was diagnosed with a kidney infection after developing nausea and back pain two-three days beforehand. The doctor did a dip stick test which in her words ‘lit up like a Christmas tree’ and therefore I’m worried about how long I’ve had it
I started on antibiotics today but the pain in my back has gotten a lot worse.
Am I being unreasonable to worry about Sepsis now that I have started the antibiotics ?

GI symptoms are common with antibiotic use.

However if you feel “sicker”, have a temperature, feel out of breath, clammy, racing heart then do go and get checked out.

ring 111.
or fill in the online form.
good luck.
doesn't sound like sepsis to me, but i'm not medically qualified, and best to seek advice as you are worried.

Thank you lovelies.
I don’t think I’ve got it at the moment it’s more the fear of developing it. I know it’s silly but with anxiety I can’t help it haha
as I’ve started antibiotics surely the chances are very low?

Antibiotics should start to show a noticeable improvement in symptoms within around 24-48hrs, you probably won't feel like running a marathon but you should see a difference. If they don't then you'd need to go back for different ones. Chances of sepsis are low anyway but become even lower once the antibiotics start working.

Is it nitrofurantoin they've given you? If so then, IME, it causes an upset tummy but does clear up the UTI really quickly. Be prepared for luminous yellow wee though!

I've had sepsis and it's the most ill I've ever felt. Look out for symptoms like feeling cold, so cold it's like your bones are cold, shivering/rigours, a sense of impending doom, uncontrollable vomiting to the point of vomiting large amounts of acrid green and brown liquid (bile), confusion, strong aversion to food and water - I knew I needed to drink but the thought of putting water in my mouth physically repelled me, the idea of it being in there was disgusting.

Antibiotics take at least 3 days to work, give them a chance. If you are no better in 3 days, ring your Gp surgery or go to your local pharmacy.

I feel for you. I've also had a kidney infection and it was horrendous. Back pain was one of my symptoms as well. The antibiotics started working quite quickly though. If you've got symptoms of sepsis go and get checked.

OP - keep yourself well hydrated, eat a balanced diet (small quantities if you don’t feel like eating much), rest and give those antibiotics a chance to work. If you’re not feeling any improvement after 3 or 4 days, contact your GP again.

Doesn’t sound anything like sepsis, I think your concerns are running away with you.

Let the antibiotics do their job, and yes, back pain is a very common symptom of kidney infection.

TTCNumber3uk · 13/05/2023 19:41

Thank you so much for your reassurance and advice I’ve needed. I know it’s silly to worry about something as unlikely as sepsis and you have all really helped.

@IamAlso4eels it is nitrofurantoin mercury pharma 100mg they’ve given me to take twice a day. I’ve taken my first one so just waiting till later to take my second xx
