My artex ceiling has grown on me! (with pics)

We moved into our new house in November and are now decorating our living room. I remember viewing the house and thinking oh dear lord when I saw the artex and thought it would be the first thing that would go.

Today my husband did a test for asbestos (so we can move a ceiling light) and a plasterer came out to give us a quote to cover it.

The quote was acceptable but now I'm wavering. The artex work is quite impressive and when I thought about getting rid of it I felt a bit guilty over the person who did it originally. Yes, I know I'm being ridiculous.

My husband is happy to keep it as likes that it's a design rather than a flat "boring" ceiling. I seem to be drawn to decor that's very 70s and art deco and he is adamant it will come back into fashion (tongue-in-cheek).

Would you get rid or keep it?

I love it

This pattern was in my parents 1960s house.
I think its much less tacky than your picture shows. I always liked it .

My dad learnt to do this is the 80’s and covered our house including the inside of the cupboard under the stairs😂

Does all Artex have Asbestos in it? Genuine question. It was on the lounge and dining room ceiling in our old house, it was the swirly type with sharp points. We considered having it removed but couldn’t be arsed with the mess. I’m glad we didn’t now.
If you like it op, keep it . It’s a good example and done well.

Sugarfree23 · 12/05/2023 06:45

Not all but some does. Google says asbestos free Artex was available from 76.
But you can get it tested before you try to remove it.

I've got a ceiling which is just even dots/blobs, and the hallway is that ice cream swirl design. Those were meant to be the first jobs I did when I moved in. 20 years later and I just don't see the point in changing it.

We just had our textured ceilings skimmed over (not removed). Might not be possible with all styles though.

To plaster over the ceiling it would have to have blue grit put over it first. I googled it after the plasterer left and that's what made me stop and think - I felt terrible at the thought of putting this stuff on it.

I can now indulge my love for 70s furniture at least! Ordered "vintage" ceiling pendants last night 😄

God, leave it! I wouldn't even notice and you can spend the money elsewhere. If I did notice, I wouldn't think ugh as yours is very well done.

And then if it does become fashionable again you won't be kicking yourself!

Modda · 12/05/2023 10:40

I think once everything is decorated you'll want it changed. It would catch my eye every time I walked in the room and not in a good way.

ClaraBourne · 13/05/2023 12:39

I'd keep but also a lover of retro. how often do you look up anyway?
