Eating off the floor

sillyme563 · 11/05/2023 18:53

9 month old currently crawling around picking bits of shit off the floor and eating it. I hoover and clean constantly every day but where is all this shit coming from?!
She's currently attempting to pick and eat the leaves off of a plant while I sit here and say no no no no no no no no move her she crawls back no no no move the plant so she finds a bit of babybel from lunch to put in her mouth instead.
Aibu to just let her eat shit off the floor. Like how much shit off the floor is acceptable before one of you says it's a safeguarding issue? Parents of older children, please advise.

There’ only so much you can do…walking along one day and my one year old was merrily chewing something. When I investigated it was a mouldy cigarette butt. Best of luck!

GrazingSheep · 11/05/2023 18:56

Mine once carried around a handful of dried dog shit for about 20 minutes before I noticed.

I remember my nephew when he was a toddler eating a beetle that was crawling along the floor.

Didnt do him any harm and he seemed to enjoy it 🤢

The "best of luck" has me howling

Wouldn’t worry too much, I worked in a high end hotel when I was studying and the amount of food that ended up either being picked up off the floor after being dropped and then served to unwitting customers was incredible!

Kitchen staff also dipped fingers into the gravy and pulled out slices of meat straight off the plates before serving. 🫣

I ate a worm. My niece chewed up an enormous slug.

It happens.

MavisMcMinty · 11/05/2023 19:03

As long as it isn’t real shit she’ll be fine, and hopefully will turn out to be an unfussy eater in other settings too.

DucksNewburyport · 11/05/2023 19:04

My son used to lick the floor. No food on it - just the floor itself.

wildfirewonder · 11/05/2023 19:05

Germs are not the risk - the risks are choking or poisoning.

They get germs just from crawling then sucking their fingers/hands.

Baby proof the room (move the plants unless you know 100% they are not toxic - most houseplants are toxic), keep floors clean, remove shoes, pick up what you see, be vigilant for choking risks. That's all you can do really.

Notimeforaname · 11/05/2023 19:06

I used to eat soap

lljkk · 11/05/2023 19:33

They survive. Probably good for their immune systems.

my little boy ate a dried bird poo once 😞

Offensiveapprently · 11/05/2023 20:24

My six year old frequently runs his tongue down the side of my car.

dancinfeet · 11/05/2023 20:32

I had a carpet licker who would then boak and puke up fluff/hairballs. She is 18 and no longer licks carpets (as far as I know).

Oh, this has reminded of when I spotted a neighbour telling off their child for licking a car wheel Envy

Johnnyripples · 11/05/2023 20:40

When my son was about 1yr I found him walking around eating a chunk of horse shit after his sister let him in her horses stable. He was fine apart from a bit of bad breath for a while 🤢

blueflame1 · 11/05/2023 20:50

These are hilarious!!!

Makes me feel so much better about the shit my daughter eats off the floor.

Most recently it was tiny stones that must have gotten into the hallway with the pram. She thought they were raisins and was confused at the crunchiness 😂

verabarbleen · 11/05/2023 21:34

Mine ate cat sick once (it was under the table and I hadn't seen it) the other one drank a candle 😭 called 111 and they said it happens often . Made me feel better... sort of

TotallyScouting · 11/05/2023 21:36

Kids are much older teens now and the story of my middle child crawling across the playroom and eating a fresh steaming poo his older brother had done in the potty whilst I was sorting their newborn sibling out is the source of much hilarity and ribbing 🤮
