Do you save stuff ‘for best’?

I used to but after some realising that best hardly ever comes I’ve stopped.

However I fancy a glass of wine and all I have in is a gift which is a £50 bottle of champagne. I’m thinking I could have two glasses tonight, the rest tomorrow and it’s all good.

But also seems wasteful.

WWYD?

YABU - wasteful bint - are you an alcoholic? Save for sharing

YANBU - crack it open and add a penguin for good measure (the only chocolate in the house)

Obviously a lighthearted thread!

Yes I used to, but came to think like you do

'Best' rarely comes

Firstmonthfree · 11/05/2023 18:24

Crack it open. If you wait for a special occasion there will be guests and you’ll only get a glass of the good stuff.

ginslinger · 11/05/2023 18:25

drink the champagne
(wear the dress and the shoes, eat the cake and tell those you love that you love them as well)

Notimeforaname · 11/05/2023 18:26

Drink it. You cant take it with you. Enjoy.

TwilightSkies · 11/05/2023 18:26

I used to save things. Now I use and enjoy it all! Life is too short. Light the fancy candles, spray the perfume, drink the posh wine 🍷 😀

Merryoldgoat · 11/05/2023 18:27

You’ve all echoed my feelings so it’s being opened very shortly!

Crack it open. We got MIL a naice bottle of champagne for her 80th birthday - she's says it's too fancy to drink and has put it away for some unspecified point in the future. That wasn't the idea at all and I'd hate to find it after she's gone (not that we have any reason to believe that will be soon)

uncomfortablydumb53 · 11/05/2023 18:42

Open it and savour every sip I say
Life is for enjoying and the simple pleasures are the best, in my opinion

TheChosenTwo · 11/05/2023 18:44

I’m not someone who saves things ‘for best’. Every day could be our last. Eat and drink the good stuff, wear your nicest perfume/clothes/shoes, drink out of the nicest glasses you have.

Lampzade · 11/05/2023 18:44

I stopped saving things ‘for best’ years ago.
I mean , how often does best come along

ShandaLear · 11/05/2023 18:45

I’ve started using every day the Wedgewood cutlery I got as a wedding gift 20 years ago. Wish I’d thought of it sooner.

Pseudonamed · 11/05/2023 18:46

No, could be dead tomorrow. Live for the now and enjoy it while you can.

Merryoldgoat · 11/05/2023 18:53

Looks like I’ve found my people!

I’m sipping whilst crocheting and watching a very bad film (which I’m enjoying).

Was it cold?! I would also have opened it but only if it had been in the fridge

AssertiveGertrude · 11/05/2023 18:58

Enjoy 😉
I used to save things for Best But now I dont

YoucancallmeKAREN · 11/05/2023 19:03

The "best" time is now. Drink the Champagne, eat the chocolates, tomorrow is not promised.

BarelyLiterate · 11/05/2023 19:04

My grandparents lived in a small terraced house which had a kitchen, dining room & separate lounge. The TV and two armchairs were in the dining room. The lounge was furnished with the ‘best’ carpets & furniture. It was used once a year, on Christmas Day. They also used it once when the priest visited.
I always said I would never live like that, and I never have.

Enjoy your champagne, OP.

jay55 · 11/05/2023 19:04

My motto is don't save anything for best.
I like to use things and get the joy.
Hope it's delicious

ssd · 11/05/2023 19:05

Enjoy!!!

Trumpton · 11/05/2023 19:09

I had breast cancer and 6 operations and chemo.
Drink the damn champagne! Use the best perfume! Light the expensive candles!
Nothing in this house gets saved for best!

reelcat · 11/05/2023 19:19

Enjoy!

GentlemenPreferBlondes · 11/05/2023 19:25

I knew someone who used to save a lot of things “for best”. Unfortunately she got cancer and died, leaving behind a lot of stuff she’d never used or barely used. Enjoy the champagne, OP!

Efficaciou5 · 11/05/2023 19:30

Provided it's chilled, open it !

BodyKeepingScore · 11/05/2023 19:34

There is nothing wasteful about enjoying every moment of your life as the opportunities arise. The champagne won't taste any differently another day. Enjoy it, for the sheer extravagance of it not being a special occasion :)

MrsMitford3 · 11/05/2023 19:36

My DH died aged 29.

We were still saving our wedding stuff "for best".

Everyday is best!! Drink the wine, wear the clothes, drink out of the glasses!!
