AIBU to ask whether this film existed?

I have a vague memory of a film I watched and trying to find out if it's real or I imagined it (it seems such an unlikely film, and for full disclosure I am epileptic and frequently "hallucinate"'all sorts of bizarre shit which isn't real Grin)

The details I recall are - some sort of older retired military, very stiff upper lip etc who (and this is why it seems so unlikely as the film was 1950s/60s IIRC) has lots of cats and likes to do embroidery Grin He comes out of retirement to be in charge of some military exercises and be a hero.

It's not "When Eight Bells Toll" with Anthony Hopkins which is the nearest kind of thing I can think of!

Please MNers do your best! I will be SO grateful if it does exist and my brain hasn't fucked up on this one Grin

I’ve got no idea but my googling is suggesting something called North Sea Hijack with Roger Moore. Could that be it?

CatsCrossStitchFilm · 11/05/2023 16:26

@JoanJettsMullet I LOVE YOU!!!!! I've googled but unsuccessfully so you are obviously a far more skilled Googler than I am!

I'm seriously pleased it was a real film as my brain has been really odd lately Smile I actually feel really happy about it - thank you!

The film is also known as ffolkes (spelling and case both correct).

CatsCrossStitchFilm · 11/05/2023 16:32

I was convinced I must have imagined it as I spent a lot of my time thinking about cats and cross stitch normally Grin

Cat picture is always a bonus so as a thank you, here is one of my own cats who believes she belongs to a villain in a James Bond film...

(I may have to ask MN to delete thread in a bit as it's outing

I'm a lifelong Roger Moore fan and have most (but not all) of his work on DVD or digital media. I bought this DVD on Amazon not long ago - it's a great film.

CatsCrossStitchFilm · 11/05/2023 16:42

I only have the vaguest memory of it but Wiki says James Mason is in it too, which makes me very happy. Can't wait to get it!

Ohh, i've always wanted to be able to help with a thread like this. Alas I couldn't help you but I'm so glad someone was able to help figure this out for you. And so quickly too.
Good old MN, this made me smile 😊😊

DogInATent · 11/05/2023 17:00

If you want to make an evening of it, I suggest a triple-bill of North Sea Hijack (1980), When Eight Bells Toll (1971), and Juggernaut (1974, with Richard Harris and Omar Sharif).

JoanJettsMullet · 11/05/2023 17:06

This sounds good, I feel Cassandra Crossing should also be added for extra Richard Harris!

The Wild Geese has Harris, Moore and Richard Burton. What could be better?

Well, The Towering Inferno could be a contender Wink

OP posts:
CatsCrossStitchFilm · 11/05/2023 17:41

Obviously, that’s based on the principal actors Grin I do think Towering Inferno (and Poseidon Adventure, and could probably think of a lot more!) are genuinely great films, but I’m also fond of a crappy schlock disaster/drama film, especially 1970s.

I was trying to keep a British nautical thriller theme going! When Eight Bells Toll is by far the better of the three, and you get a bonus Anthony Hopkins in Juggernaut.

Does Cassandra Crossing better fit into a disease/plague theme or a thrillers-on -trains theme?

Roussette · 11/05/2023 18:03

@CatsCrossStitchFilm

Just for future reference, this website is brilliant. If you (or anyone else on here) can't remember a film just type some bits you remember into the search engine and it will find it for you! If it doesn't find it, just think of something else to type, you'll get there eventually!

That looks fab @Roussette I have sent the link to my DCs!

"Does Cassandra Crossing better fit into a disease/plague theme or a thrillers-on -trains theme?"

@DogInATent that is a very good question. I think it's more thriller on a train. Now, something like Train to Busan would however tip into disease/plague, I feel.

@JaneJeffer you really do! I'm so glad I've "found" it - and been reminded of so many others I need to rewatch Smile

I genuinely do have a really poor working and long term memory (especially events pre 2018) at the moment. The only "benefit" I get is that watching some films/series again feels like watching it for the first time as in I can't remember specific plots etc but it also feels "comforting" as I recognise some of it, if that makes any sense at all.

This thread has actually made me realise why I've been so obsessed with rewatching things at the moment, as I like the comfort, and need it at the moment.

(I could start a whole other thread on re-reading books for the same reasons. I have the best value for money Kindle library in the world Smile)

Just popping back in to say Juggernaut is on TV today! Talking Pictures channel at 10pm - and it has subtitles (which can be unusual for "old" film channels) We need subtitles here so I've ordered the DVD for North Sea Hijack as the You Tube captioning wasn't good enough.

(And don't get me started on the shit subtitles for Eurovision - I may actually start a separate thread if there isn't one already!)

Happy comfort viewing to all Smile
