Escort police knock down 80 yr old woman

Escort police, protecting Sophie Wessex, knocked down an 80 year old woman yesterday.

Why does SW need a police escort? Motor bikes surrounding her car?

AIBU to think this is madness?

I hate this argument that they work hard for the country. Charles did less than 12 weeks work, spread over the whole year, in 2021. And some of his engagements were his own personal interests eg Duchy Originsls. Sophie did only a small fraction of that. It’s farcical to imply they are slaving away on our behalf week in week out.

Duchy Originals and the successor brands give the royalties to charity - millions of pounds. It is an interest of Charles but not for his benefit.

There is an awful lot of jealously, pettines, ignorance on here - and real failure to understand the political and economic implications of the 'just get rid of them' attitude. And it is an attitude most of the anti-monarcists on here are striking rather than making any arguments.

I prefer a monarchy - I think a political head of state is extremely divisive. I think the monarchy is cheaper than a presidency (see earlier post). We also have the best known monarchy in the world. There is no other country has what we have. Why throw that away?

There are arguments for a republic I can respect but I have yet to see them on here. Most people want the system we have to continue so it is an abstract argument. If republicans want to convince us of the merits of a republic with a president the onus is on them to up their game and make decent arguments not petty remarks.

What an utterly bizarre thread

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Ah yes, that wellknown documentary.

determinedtomakethiswork · 11/05/2023 17:23

I think probably the only people who would recognise this woman are actually on the royal family forum on mumsnet.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/05/2023 17:50

Im not in the slightest bit jealous. I posted perfectly reasonable stats to counter the “hardworking” trope that’s been trotted out on this thread.

givemecoffeenow · 11/05/2023 17:54

I feel bad for the poor 80 yr old lady this happened to. Sounds like the driver might be at fault.

I don’t think the police escorts are necessary. If I’m being honest I didn’t even know who the Duchess of Edinburgh was before seeing this story on the news. But then I’m not really that interested in the royal family.

I do think all the police escorts are a bit over the top personally. If anything doesn’t this draw attention to her, rather than just travelling inconspicuously in a car with blacked out windows? 🤨

I do think the royal family are spending money and resources excessively, I mean imagine how much it costs tax payers to have a police escort everywhere you go ffs!

I assume the Duchess didn’t stop to help the elderly pedestrian that had been knocked over? I guess she couldn’t risk getting blood stains on her expensive designer clothes that we payed for? 🙄

Actually it is VERY weird.

Nobody else seems to be reporting it.

I saw it on BBC and Apple News this morning.

rwalker · 11/05/2023 18:28

The reason the bike was there is completely irrelevant
it’s about fault and cause is the only thing that matters
not the fact it was linked to a royal

Nefarious people, take note. You are only allowed to carry your activities on a boat. In a lake. In Ireland.

Everywhere else is off limits for you.

Well done @Swrigh1234 .

It's about time somebody told these rascally scamps the rules.

4plus the hound.
I really cannot decide if you’re simply a piece of work,or stupid. We have god knows how many terrorists in this country, she is a high profile royal( more so in recent years) is married to the son of the late queen and we’ve just had a coronation. In regard to the latter ,we will still be on high alert.
These people receive death threats(credible or otherwise) every single day. The fact you ask “why her?” in itself makes her high risk ,because no one is getting close enough to Charles or William ,so a lesser royal married to one in the line of succession, would send a message.
You also do not know if credible information of a threat has been received, and likely won’t in the majority of cases.
Im guessing you don’t think those in witness protection or the likes of Salman Rushdie deserve police protection?
We not only live under constant threat of Islamic terrorism, but the situation in Ireland is starting to kick off,I personally remember how we had to daily check under my partners car for IRA bombs back in the 80s ,he was in the forces. These royals serve the public and put themselves at risk every day, whether you like it or not they need protecting.
I suggest you grow up.

I really cannot decide if you’re simply a piece of work,or stupid.

In my experience the two are not mutually exclusive Feral. The evidence is all around us.

Interesting it's Sophie who's in agony.
Meghan had multiple death threats made against her yet the RF refuses to allow H&M fund their own security. It's simply hypocrisy at best and forbid it, racism by the divine RF.

I thought the Harkles had been told to provide their own security? But wanted the British public to pay for it. And the King told him forget it.

The poor woman was knocked down on the Pelican Crossing that crosses the westbound A4 West Cromwell Road at the (blocked off) end of Nevern Road.

I would doubt very much that a woman in her 80s would try to "nip across" a busy three-lane major road, so I think it is safe to assume she was probably using the Pelican and crossing on the green man.

The police rider should be arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, just like any other person who did the same.

Thank you.

Hi there @Feraldogmum

I am not typicaly described as a piece of work or indeed stupid. Most who know me find me even keeled and failry decent.

I do think Salman R should have security.

I do think that the royals .

Not by a long shot.

So you know that it was his driving that was at fault & he was driving dangerously. You should be a professional crash investigator with that insight

Any other person wouldn't automatically be arrested. Even in fatal accidents involving pedestrians drivers aren't automatically arrested. There needs to be a crash investigation, witnesses spoken to, cctv checked. No driver in this situation is automatically assumed guilty. Except on MN ofcourse

Op, you sound like a bitter and twisted woman. Is that the impression you hope to give? Mean minded and acidic.

The woman stepped into the road. Plenty of witnesses said just that.

The woman stepped into the road. Plenty of witnesses said just that.

We need the rest of it..

How far into the road was she?

How fast was the bike going?

How close to the curb was the bike driving?

Was the bike behind the car or beside it?

Do they modyify for weather etc.

Was her light green ?

And so on...

I am not so sure on this though.

After crossing on Cheapside in the city of London recently at a green man signal and then nearly being mown down by Catherine’s outriders I am not surprised. I hope the lady is ok.
