To expect DP to take some action

DP recently took a driving job which was advertised as 6/7am start - 3/4pm finish. We hoped that this would mean he could pick up DS from nursery on the days my late shifts fell. Last couple of weeks, he's been doing 6am-6pm and tonight he didn't finish until 9pm.

DP also only found out end of April that payday is not until mid month. He has no idea if he'll get paid for these extra hours worked over his contract.

With employers, I've always accepted unavoidable circumstances that have a negative impact as long as they are one offs.

I am now getting quite annoyed with this as his employer seems to be taking advantage and DP is not asking any questions or setting any boundaries.

He comes home, complains and is irritable but I'm struggling to sympathise when no action is being taken. While I'm asking if I'm being unreasonable, I'm also asking, how can I help him?

Does he have a contract? Are the extra hours arranged beforehand? I’d be reading up on what’s what and tell DP to grow a back bone

Maybe he wants to see how it plays out first. If they were going to pay him all along he doesn't want to flag himself as "that" new guy. Is it an unusually busy time that he needs to work late for a short period and it's just bad luck?

I'd be the same. Instead I'd plan ahead about my next steps and where I stand legally if they fuck about, and check my contract thoroughly.

What sort of driving job is it ? The firm I work for has a finish shift time but it’s very rare that happens in fact this is the only firm I have ever worked for where you have to book to finish on time !!
is it traffic to blame or just learning the route/systems ? Most driving jobs unless you are restricted to tacho hours tend to be liberal in their job descriptions

He needs to do what any woman would have to do, and say "nursery pickup is 5pm, I can't finish later than 4pm" and stick to it.

Apart from anything else if he’s only finished driving at 9pm he is not allowed by law to drive again until 11 hours later, ie 7am.
