How much are you spending on holidays this year?

We've had a really tough few years with multiple family deaths and as such I feel very bleak at the thought of Christmas. I'm suddenly wondering about the idea of going away somewhere pretty hot that won't feel traditionally Christmassy, to do something different this year.

Have never gone away at Christmas before so expect it would cost loads.

Aside from that I booked three nights in a very nice hotel for a Dublin city break (as part of visiting family elsewhere) that's coming to 750 euros. We can't stay with family and need to hire a car, so that visit will cost 1500 - 2000 euros depending on what Airbnb we get. Everything seems very expensive and maybe that city break money would be better used as part of a proper holiday elsewhere?

How much is everyone spending on holidays this year? Just nosy really, as I know everyone has different budgets and priorities of course.

I've spent quite a bit this last year as had three holidays abroad. Next year it will be less as getting some home improvements. It's possibly irrelevant what I spend though tbh. It's about individual preferences and choices. You want a warm holiday At Christmas that will be more expensive. You will need to fly further. Egypt or Tenerife or maybe Caribbean? Then it's open you can have luxury or basic and the cost will vary massively. You can chose self catering or fully inclusive and the cost will vary massively again. It may be better to book time in with a travel agent.

£6000 just spent on a holiday in Croatia but that was for 6 of us and me and DH are heading to Thailand at Christmas, which is coming in at circa £4000. I like holidays :)

ImGoingThroughChanges · 24/08/2023 05:50

Haven’t used a travel agent since 1987.

We took a family weekend to a festival (800 including tickets)

a week in Paris for me and my son (2000)

a week in Cyprus just for me to visit friends (1500)

and hoping for a short visit to Berlin at Christmas with my other child (1500)

pompomdaisy · 24/08/2023 06:23

@ImGoingThroughChanges I'm pleased for you but it's not about you and the op doesn't sound so holiday savvy. They serve their purpose

ImGoingThroughChanges · 24/08/2023 06:27

How is it not about me? OP asked how much YOU were spending on holidays. First reply was someone spamming her travel agent business. I answered Op’s question with info about me. Weird response.

Less than £300 this year but ive had other expenses taking my money

I quite enjoy reading others plans though but it gets a bit depressing when you aren't getting away

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 24/08/2023 07:15

Yeah. They've blatantly resurrected this thread to promote their business. It wasn't even subtle.

We usually spend around £5k for a family of 4 in the school holidays but this year we went to Florida for 18 nights, spent around £17k in total, once in a lifetime hols with the teens. Back to the normal £5k next year.

Pippa12 · 24/08/2023 07:19

I got bargain flights to the canaries, around £350 for all 4 of us return just after new year! Kids will miss 2/3 days of school but I’m not too fussed. Hotel is £1550 HB.

£1900 half board for 8 days in a really good 4 star (we’ve been before!) I’m chuffed to bits.

Hope you all have great holidays, I’m constantly on the look out. Currently hunting for Oct 24. I never use an agent.

StampOnTheGround · 24/08/2023 07:20

About 2.3k for 2 adults and an under 2 for 10 days all inclusive - this is September though

Op if you can book your own flights and find your own accmd you can do anything supper cheap. As soon as easy jet flights come out we book, find our own hotel, b and b or air b and b

As the travel agent costs have to be factored in somewhere, you are likely to get a lot less for your money this way though. I looked at using one in Asia and they wanted to charge me over £11k for economy flights, 3 star hotels etc when I managed to get business class and 4 or 5 stars by myself for the same price!

toddlermom99 · 24/08/2023 07:28

This is for 2 adults and a 3 year old.
Within the next 6 months we're going to Asia for a month which is totalling to about £6000 for flights and accommodations. Not sure how much we'll spend out there.

Mexico for a week (family wedding) totalling around £2500 all inclusive.

Then we're traveling around Europe for 3 weeks roughly totalling around £5000 that's 2 weeks all inclusive cruise and a few days either side in Italy.

I'd definitely say things have gotten much more expensive. I backpacked around asia back in 2019 before having my child and prices were SO much cheaper. I also think there's been a large increase in all inclusives with companies such as TUI etc too.

Yeah there has. People are liking packages more because of the uncertainty of the last few years, and liking all inclusives more because it's easier to budget. I like a UK break too and we've done one, but it is a bit more uncertain because you always have to build in collateral in case the weather misbehaves.

Slightly off topic but I found the first Christmas after family death helpful and healing

We had so many memories to share it really helped

YouJustDoYou · 24/08/2023 09:04

Zero. We don't do holidays.
