Sticking my head in the sand

I discovered a lump early April. Finally took up enough courage to put in an online consultation on 19th April. I've had a message only today. I have an appointment for early June.

That's too long for a lump? Right?

Aibu to think that's totally unacceptable? Even putting the consult in for me was a huge deal. I'm autistic and have a thing about doctors and sometimes struggle to advocate for myself

Unfortunately that's the waiting time now. I need an OP on my mouth. I will have to wait 7 months for it.

Lucydoddledoo · 09/05/2023 20:36

This is literally just to see the gp. I figured it was a 2 week thing still?

2WW applies the to GP referring to a consultant

Worrying. Finding a lump

Have you had a quote for private?

Lucydoddledoo · 09/05/2023 20:54

No. But it seems an in person gp locally is approx £75

Lucydoddledoo · 09/05/2023 20:55

I really struggle with gp's because the last gp I saw told me it was impossible for me to be menopausal as I still have my periods

Inkblue · 09/05/2023 20:57

Have you told the GP where the lump is? You should be seen much quicker than that if it were in your breast, for example.

Lucydoddledoo · 09/05/2023 21:00

Yes. They know. Maybe that's the issue. It's in/on my neck. It's fairly sizeable. Approx 1 inch across by maybe 3 inch.

my GP surgery usually follow up econsults the same day - on one occasion I didn't hear from them, I followed up with a phone call the following day.
Can't recall why they'd not got back to me, but got an apology.

Didtheythough · 09/05/2023 21:05

I had a lump at the end of 2021, I was seen by GP the day I called, and referred to breast cancer centre for tests (consultant examination, mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy) 10 days later. I know things have changed in last 18mnths but to deteriorate that much is truely shocking, I'm really sorry OP (incidentally the biopsy showed my lump was harmless as most are, if that helps at all)

tootsierubs · 09/05/2023 21:10

I think you need to call them and ask to be seen urgently. It could just be a swollen lymph node. My father had a neck lump and was seen the same day. His turned out to be something unpleasant so please don't let them fob you off. You need to be seen way before June.

Lucydoddledoo · 09/05/2023 21:18

I did try to call this morning and was 27 in the queue. I couldn't bring myself to wait.

Husband has checked it. He confirms its definitely a lump. It doesn't seem to be in a lymph area. It's my throat.

Situations like this I hate being autistic as it just feels challenging to take the next step. I've been waiting since early April.

I do have a blood test tomorrow. Although not to check for menopause/peri menopause as the gp claims it would be impossible

Lucydoddledoo · 10/05/2023 10:51

Blood test today. My body never gives up blood easily. I hate it. I'm hoping this test might indicate something

Sparkletastic · 10/05/2023 11:18

Is the lump at the base of your throat OP?

Lucydoddledoo · 10/05/2023 11:20

No. From under my chin ish, although throat not chin. It extends down my throat to where it dips in. I could draw a pic

OP posts:
Lucydoddledoo · 10/05/2023 11:27

I.feel like if I follow it down my throat I can feel it down to in-between my collar bone but I don't know if I'm not just making it up. Like I said, I can't ever seem to tell

OP posts:
Sparkletastic · 10/05/2023 11:55

Could it be a goitre? Any other signs of thyroid disfunction?

Lucydoddledoo · 10/05/2023 12:34

I've just looked it up. It could well be that. I think it's most likely. I've had recent weight gain (think approx 4.5 stone in 2 years.) I've always been slightly below the threshold for thyroid issues in blood tests

OP posts:
Lucydoddledoo · 10/05/2023 12:40

The only thing that makes me question it is goitre is lower throat. Mine is a lot bigger towards the top of my throat

Whatabouteverything · 10/05/2023 12:43

No one here can tell you. You have a husband - let him advocate for you
Of course you need to be seen sooner especially as you've put it off. It could be a tumour. Get your husband to call the gp today or call 111 to be seen sooner. You do not need to pay and see someone privately but you do need to be extremely proactive with the NHS and insistent. Being autistic is a bit of an excuse here - you know you're avoiding it and you're aware of that fact so just stop avoiding it - or in your case get someone to help you.

Sparkletastic · 10/05/2023 15:18

Might well be goitre OP. My DD's presented very high.

Walkacrossthesand · 10/05/2023 22:22

Goitre moves with swallowing - slightly up as you gather the mouth contents, back down as they travel downwards.

Toomanylatenightprogs · 10/05/2023 22:33

Obviously I’m not a medic and I can’t see your lump but fwiw I have a goitre, I’ve had it for about 12 years ( didn’t realise what it was, thought it was just a saggy neck, never occurred to me to go to a doctor) it was only investigated when a GP spotted it when I was there for something else. It’s been scanned a couple of times, nothing sinister. And blood tests show no hypothyroidism.
Some days it’s more noticeable than others.
Hope yours turns out to be nothing but I agree you should be seen quicker.

Lucydoddledoo · 11/05/2023 20:04

@Whatabouteverything autism is in no way an excuse. It's a fact and impacts more areas of life that you'd realise. My executive functioning is particularly impacted and sometimes it's like being too mentally paralysed to do something. It's hard to explain but happens to enough autistics that it is genuinely a thing. Also, despite being diagnosed autistic, I can pass for NT so people over estimate my abilities.

I've managed my blood test. I'll give a week for those results and then ask husband for some support to get to the gp.

Thanks all for your suggestions
