To not have sworn allegiance to King Charles - did you?

I am just watching a repeat of the Coronation. The bit about swearing allegiance to him and his heirs and successors. Absolutely not.

Hell naw! Not seen any of it either

MisschiefMaker · 08/05/2023 20:31

I did. Primarily to get a rise out of my anti-monarchy DH.

Surely nobody takes this seriously?! It's just pomp and circumstance.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 08/05/2023 20:31

but I really enjoyed the the hole thing Freudian slip...

PurpleChrayne · 08/05/2023 20:32

Hell, no. I would sooner pluck out my own eyes and sauté them in butter.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 08/05/2023 20:33

No, I didn’t.

I'm fairly ambivalent about the royal family, not really against them but not a supporter either. I watched some of the coronation out of interest / historical importance but certainly don’t feel in any way inclined to pledge my allegiance.

Brumbies · 08/05/2023 20:34

No why would I?

Justanotherlurker · 08/05/2023 20:36

You cared enough to watch the repeat, and you cared enough to start a thread about how much you didn't care, next week you will move on to the next [current thing] so it isn't really a defining marker.

I am in the US at the minute at one of the most liberal "vote blue no matter who" states and it was wall to wall Coronation, it has been pointed out multiple times that paying the money for a tradition that has a world wide audience is nothing to the 4 year presidential cycle

Atethehalloweenchocs · 08/05/2023 20:36

No, totally outdated idea and an expensive waste of money - both the day and the family.

Nanalisa60 · 08/05/2023 20:28

No I did not, but I really enjoyed the the hole thing, and the concert last night was so much better then I expected. Im quite happy that Charles is the King. The royal family only cost us about £2 each a year, well sorry I think that’s good value for money. They are a constant in a very mad world, and with all that’s happened in this country in the last 10 years I’m happy with having a royal family. Remember they are here to serve us and I would not want there jobs for all the tea in China.

Well you need to pay my share. And everyone else who doesn't want them. Because we can't opt out or vote them out.

And I hate the idea of a family of frankly awful (some of them) people ruling because divine right or some bollocks.

tinytemper66 · 08/05/2023 20:37

I haven't watched any of the event. Didn't swear allegiance.

lavenderlou · 08/05/2023 20:37

It was all a mountain out of a molehill. Archbishop of Canterbury briefly said anyone who wanted could join on. Highly doubtful anyone outside the cathedral even had the words.

Livingtothefull · 08/05/2023 20:38

No. But as KClll was unable to honour his marriage vows he won't of course expect any of us to honour a pledge of allegiance.

theblackradiator · 08/05/2023 20:44

No I didn't. what were we actually meant to say anyway? I watched the coronation on ITV and I remember the commentator at the time saying the words to pledge alligence would appear on the screen for anyone that wished to do so but the words never appeared on screen. not on my TV anyway!

watcherintherye · 08/05/2023 20:48

No, I didn’t feel moved to do that, but I do like the continuity that comes with having a Constitutional Monarchy. I think people who would rather have an elected President than a Royal Family should be careful what they wish for.

SherbetDips · 08/05/2023 20:50

I did yes, but I support the royal family. And if you don’t why would you.

BobBobBobbing · 08/05/2023 20:52

In the words of the Nac Mac Feegle: Nae king! Nae quin! Nae laird! Nae master! We willna' be fooled again!

I will not bend my knee to anyone.

This!

Livelovebehappy · 08/05/2023 20:55

it was a hypothetical question. Don’t think he expected a response either way tbh…,

AnotherSaturdayNight · 08/05/2023 20:59

No!

katemulberrybush · 08/05/2023 21:21

I didn't but i don't think it affects anything

DustyLee123 · 08/05/2023 21:21

Absolutely not. Can’t wait for him to abdicate 🙏🏻

Kedece2410 · 08/05/2023 21:22

I dont know what some posters are going to get worked up about now the Coronation is over

thinkofablinkingnamewoman · 08/05/2023 21:23

Of course not

Fine, then let's make it funding by voluntary public subscription shall we? I can think of many better ways to spend £2 but I'm happy for you to pay my share.

Xiaoxiong · 08/05/2023 21:52

Well, I did, because I did it a few years back at my naturalisation ceremony and I wanted to show the kids what I had said as they'll never have to do it, having been born here.

I wouldn't like any mandatory oaths or pledges. This was voluntary (like my naturalisation) so I don't care a bit if other people people do or don't want to but it was meaningful to me.
