I just want to paint the room! (Lighthearted)

This is lightheart and is really just a mope.

I know I'm BU, and I know it's my fault for a)buying a renovation project and b)doing it ourselves and that it will be worth it in the long run...

But AIBU for just wanting to paint my room a nice colour?? So far its taken three days of sanding, filling, taking off radiators, more sanding, sugar soaping, realising I've missed sanding a bit, so sanding more. Then sugarsoaping again.
Then I've got to paint the ceiling which I hate, and paint over the terrible colour from before with white pain BEFORE I can finally just paint my room the colour I want it.

I just want to use the fun coloured paint 😂

I feel your pain. I know prep is the key, but good, it's not exciting is it?

Currently renovating my 1950's house and feeling very resentful of the time spent on the sanding and poly filler stage.

Worth it once it's done though...

It's really not fun is it! It will be worth it is my
ongoing motto Whilst I grit my teeth and replace my sandpaper yet again.
1950s is a lovely period of property! Widely overlooked but usually fab windows and room sizes!

How is it going now @Maraudingmarauders ?

Have you got to the exciting bit yet?

Haha thanks for checking in! No, I've just done the first cost of white to cover their previous colours... getting there slowly though. On the home stretch and hoping to palm off the ceiling to DH...

What colour are you going for, Marauding?

Soothing sage, by Valspar! Took about 15 different green samples from various ranges to find one I finally liked. Up to the picture rail and then white above.

1950 place here too. Loved the picture rails and high ceilings when we bought. Should have accounted for my height and the ceiling spotlights (why did they do this to our living room?!!) when picking a step ladder though, I (maybe mercifully?) cannot paint the ceiling 😅

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 10/05/2023 21:28

I feel your pain. We bought a renovation project too and are doing everything ourselves.

Currently renovating the front bedroom for my toddler and we've had to lime plaster some of the walls, board and plaster the chimney breast, replace the coving, put ceiling lights in as there were only wall lights 🙄, patch the ceiling where we removed a built in cupboard and discovered the ceiling above it was missing, fix a leaking roof when we discovered water leaking down the walls, replace the radiator and loads of other boring stuff.

I left the sanding to my DP as I don't have the patience!
It should finally be finished this week and it's taken months 😓.

Maraudingmarauders · 10/05/2023 23:04

@Blessedbethefruitz perfect excuse 🤣
@PissedOffNeighbour22 always seems a great idea at the time! We had to lime plaster our last house. Amazing material but takes forever to dry. Fingers crossed for finishing this week!! Sanding is possibly the worst job, because it causes so much extra work!!

I'm very proud of my window returns though. The last owners had done some kind of awful pebbledash paint just on the inside of the windows. So I sanded those down to a certain level (aka what I could be bothered) and have plastered for a smooth finish. Now sanded and dried and ready to be painted (first coat) tomorrow!!

@Maraudingmarauders How old is your house? Mine is around 1790 and the walls aren't in great condition inside. We keep finding more and more stuff that has been bodged or badly done.

Your window returns sound good! Hope it goes well getting them painted.

Our carpet went down in DD new bedroom last night - fitter didn't turn up until 8pm 😑. So it's pretty much finished and my DP will build the furniture today while I'm at work. Then there'll be a couple of small bits to do - so glad it's finished as we've been at it since January.

We now have to move onto decorating DD old bedroom so we can move the baby in there but there's so much left to do. Downstairs is the worst looking and I'm embarrassed when people see it.

Maraudingmarauders · 11/05/2023 12:59

@PissedOffNeighbour22 our old property was grade II listed and from about 1760 - and old workers cottage. We had a nightmare with damp in the fireplace and 197s bodge work from when they'd originally been renovated, it had been derelict for about 50 or so years. Honestly some of the work people do on houses is insane. It's part of the reason we strip everything back, at least we know its done right this time. We just have to suffer in the process! Our new place ( new, its been over 2 years!) Is 1970s, so a totally different beast. Not any easier though, which is a shock. Though at least we don't have LBC to worry about.
8pm is crazy for a fitter to turn up, but at least it is done!
My DH is the same - hates people coming g round and seeing the place in a state. But you shouldn't- be proud because they'll see what it looks like done eventually and I can promise most people are just awe.inspired at you taking it on - especially with children in the mix.
We've got a baby on the way, hence a sudden flurry of activity to get rooms sorted 😂 jut also makes the manual labour much harder work for me! DH is normally the more DIY involved but I'm on annual leave this week and determined to get it done.

@Maraudingmarauders Your previous house sounds like a lot of hard work! It's amazing how bad some of the work is that previous owners have done to houses.

At least a 70s place should be a little easier. My previous house was 1950s and although there was some seriously crap diy, at least nothing there was dangerous or threatening the house's stability.

Good luck with the pre-baby decorating. Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly without uncovering any diy horrors 😄

Maraudingmarauders · 01/06/2023 20:51

@PissedOffNeighbour22 @Blessedbethefruitz @Butteredtoast55 @froginawell how are all your projects coming along??
I'm pleased to say we are done minus some niggles like fixing the radiator and hanging some paintings. We will get a carpet, eventually, but a little way down the list as expensive and not a priority. It was worth the wait for the colour!

Your bedding looks so cosy @Maraudingmarauders Is it a blanket on top of a duvet?

froginawell · 01/06/2023 21:10

Looks brilliant! I love the colours

I managed to get stitches in my hand, so no decorating for a while... I've now finished the painting, but plucking up courage to hang the curtain rail...

Maraudingmarauders · 01/06/2023 22:24

@froginawell thanks! Oh gosh, that sounds horrible. I hope its healing okay. Curtain rail will certainly help finish a room off!

@YellowHatt thank you- yes a regular duvet with waffle print fabric for texture and a green velvet bedspread (from made. I think, its been a while!).

Butteredtoast55 · 02/06/2023 07:26

I love the way the light is cast in the room and the contrast of the darker bedspread and bed frame. It's great when your project comes together just as you want it to!

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 03/06/2023 01:04

@Maraudingmarauders Congrats on getting there with the room! It looks lovely :)

Not much going on here. Daughter's room is still not fully finished and we're making a start on the spare room soon. My DP and the kids have just come down with a stomach bug so there won't be much happening on the week I've taken off work 😕

Maraudingmarauders · 07/06/2023 21:59

Sory I missed this @PissedOffNeighbour22 sorry to hear about the stomach bug - I'm now in the same situation so very glad we got finished before it hit! Good luck with the next project.

OP posts:
PissedOffNeighbour22 · 08/06/2023 00:32

@Maraudingmarauders Sorry to hear you have it too 😣. Hope you're better soon.

My DP had to have an emergency tooth extraction today now he's over the stomach bug so that's another lost day of my week of annual leave and more behind with the projects.

We have managed to decorate the spare room, and the small hallway next to it will be finished tomorrow. Just some touching up on both needed and fingers crossed it won't be too long a wait for the carpets to be fitted. The carpet fitter has been in hospital but is hopeful for late next week.

We'll be moving our 16mth old into the spare room once it's finally finished. I really can't wait for him to be out of our room. He wakes around 4am and starts shrieking. I can't take it anymore!
