I don't enjoy going on holiday

There I have said it. It's not that I hate it, but I definitely don't get what the fuss is all about. And I flatter myself that I am open-minded, not unadventurous, etc. etc. I even like travelling for work, which I have done a lot. But when I go on holiday, it always seems like a lot of faff for a lot of money and not that much pay off. I would rather spend on little things that make daily life better, like good coffee, books, nice clothes to wear. Am I the only person in the world like this, because everyone else seems to be bonkers about holidays?

As I have got older I have started to feel like this OP

Not all , some have only traveled once and some have reasons that lead me to believe the above . Hence me question it

I lived abroad until I was 11 years old, so I think all the moving around, leaving behind friends and pets, always being the new girl at school, nothing ever being permanent, etc., are what made me so averse to travelling now. “There’s no place like (my Devon) home.”

Keygraer · 09/05/2023 15:04

Oh my gosh, how can you possibly not love holidays 😱😱😱😱😱😱 shock horror.

BIG roll eyes 🙄

Just because we are supposed to like holidays doesn't mean we should. Like we are supposee to go to uni, pass our driving tests, get a 9-5 job, buy a house, have 2.5 children, it doesn't mean we should.

I think a lot of people book that annual holiday because they feel they should but actually would opt out if they thought hard about it/didn't have other family to keep happy/were forced out if the habit.

I think the pandemic showed many of us that we can survive perfectly happy with holidays and that the world wouldn't stop turning if we didn't go abroad anymore. It might even become more commonplace one day for people to not go on holiday. They are a relatively recent habit really.

I really like travelling and going on holidays.....but not as a parent.

Going with dd feels like the same old constant negotiation, compromise, not doing what I really want to do, tolerating grumpiness etc that we have at home. Yes we ask her what she'd like to do, involve her in decision making, relax screen time rules etc etc but dd is 11 and wants to do different things to us and wants to hang out with her friends.
On one level I'm glad she feels secure enough to be itching for independence but it can be tedious.

On the rare occasion I've gone away without dd it's been lovely. All my holidays pre-dd were lovely. They will be again.

njg616 · 09/05/2023 15:45

I am also the same even though I spent most of my 20s travelling.

I'm quite happy to have a staycation at home as a break now

13Bastards · 09/05/2023 15:54

I prefer memories to 'stuff' and Going on holiday is my favourite thing to spend money on but if we were all the same, life would be dull! You do you.

Gettingbysomehow · 08/05/2023 19:51

I hate going away. Id rather stay at home. I've travelled the world already and I'm 61. I like my home comforts and my garden and pets.

Same here. I'm 61, have travelled the world and have no desire to go abroad again. I enjoy going out and about in this country, seeing different places but prefer going home at the end of the day.

sugarfreegum · 09/05/2023 21:26

alittlequinnie · 08/05/2023 22:00

I'm not a fan either.

I think it's because I really love my home, I really love my husband and I really love my job and I don't feel like I need to "get away"?

Telling people they are "not your thing" is akin to saying "I just strangled a kitten" though isn't it?!

@alittlequinnie exactly! You are living the dream imho, but it's like sacrilege to say it.

Love that there are so many of us holiday agnostics coming out. To those that are reassuring me I don't have to go if I don't want to - I don't, not really, not anymore. I go on the odd one and will always accept an invite to an event (like overseas wedding) but realised a few years back that it is a waste of money for me, so have pretty much stopped.

@Keygraer you might be right, perhaps it is one of those things that people do because they are 'supposed' to. I have to checked off everything else on that list either Grin

Nope , holidays are the reason I work all year they are my motivator . I absolutely love holidays and meeting other countries

those who never left the U.K. will have such narrow mindset . It is so shocking to me . I can’t grasp it at all , why wouldn’t you like to meet new places and cultures ? Is it because people are very self absorbed and won’t tolerate something different or are they xenophobic and scared of different people ?? It really is a weird concept to me to never leave this island and be proud of it

Posters HAVE left the UK on holiday and travelled extensively - they just don't like it.

You haven't read the thread.

I live in a lovely place & I have no desire anymore to go abroad. I did in the past but the organising now is just not worth it. I would rather stay home & go on day trips.

But I have a DD so I have to do something so I compromise & we do a Blackpool trip 2 nights, a 1 night showing trip in Manchester & a 4 days camping trip (with my friends & all their kids). I would be happy with none but I have to do it for my Daughter!

rooroorooroooroo · 11/05/2023 22:10

I'm just off a flight back from Turkey this evening

Lovely while we were there, it's 22:10 and I've just put the first of numerous washes on

I'm over it already, I wish we hadn't gone. I'm tired but I need my jeans for tomorrow 😂

East, West - Home's best

ohtobebythesea · 11/05/2023 22:45

Yes!! When i’m on holiday i’m in major overthinking mode! Thinking about all the things at home that I could or should be doing, I hate the stress of the airport or any travelling and being so far away. The stress of something awful happening whilst abroad. I went on an expensive holiday last year and found myself thinking along of lines of ‘This is costing £200 a day I need to make the most of it’ which caused me more stress and feel guilty about the money. Id probably have an amazing week at home in ‘holiday mode’ eating nice food, spending more money than usual, eating out, drinking if I fancy it without needing to actually be away from home to do it. Now i’ve written that maybe I will do a ‘holiday at home’ and see if it’s enjoyable. A few weeks ago we went to a very pretty part of the UK though and it was lovely so maybe i’m just a close to home bird

SocksAndTheCity · 11/05/2023 23:04

I was thinking the same @ohtobebythesea . If I could I would take the money I would normally spend on a holiday and have a week off work spending it on food, visiting places, activities and so on that I wouldn't usually have the time or the budget for.

I would have a nice lie in every day and spend hours reading quietly without any interruptions or having to put the washing on 😊

YouWonJayne · 11/05/2023 23:08

I’ve found my people!

I agree OP. Holidays are so expensive and almost always an anti-climax. I end up just wanting to come home

This is exactly what I do with my time off. I love a week or so of lying in, enjoying myself and also getting shit done. I quite often spend 2-3 days decluttering and cleaning my home. I like to go for walks and to the gym. Plus i nap a lot. Potter in town and drink coffee. Then I go back to work and everyone else has been skiing or whatnot, but I couldn't be more chuffed with my week off.

No one’s said that though have they? I’ve lived and worked on three continents. Did absolutely tons of travelling in my 20s - early 40s.

Now in my 50s I can’t be bothered. I work long hours and am knackered (menopause). Time off is spent doing nice things at home. Visiting friends and family, going to the spa I’m a member of, lovely walks and lunches out.

I live in an AONB. Love it here.
