To ask you what a reasonable petrol contribution is?

Person A and person B live a street apart from one another. They both start a training course that is a 25 minute (20 miles) drive away from their home. It is 6 sessions over a 6 week period. Person B suggests maybe they car pool and take it in turns to drive each week. Person A says don’t worry, I will drive us every week. Person B asks if they’re sure, person A insists. Person A is a 2 car household whereas person B’s family share a car, so her husband and children would be left without a car on the days she is on the course if she drove. Not a huge deal, but nice to not put her DH in that position.

Person B insists they will help with petrol, and pay parking. Parking ends up only being £1 each session. How much is a reasonable contribution towards petrol each week?

I use the RAC petrol price calculator.

I'd put 30 quid in a thank you card on the last day along with a box of chocolates.

240 miles. 25p per mile would be £60. So £30?

Personally if I was A I wouldn't have asked for anything anyway as I had insisted I would drive and would be making the journey regardless. I wouldn't think anything more than £20 and some flowers or something were needed here from B.

Unsure if you're A or B. Personally if A has 'insisted' and hasn't asked for or specified a contribution I'd be more inclined to treat them. Maybe buy them lunch or the coffees on training days. Seems friendlier than offering a fiver. Also if there are little things you might find useful for your training I'd buy an extra one or share with A...I'm thinking goodies like mini highlighters, post-its, poly pockets etc. I'd also buy a bunch of flowers next day.
If you'd prefer to stick with cash a fiver a day plus parking seems reasonable.

You can put the journey into rac calculator to work out cost of.journey - add on parking and divide by 2.

Agreed. Person B was content to share the journeys and whilst lovely of Person A to not want to leave the other parent without a car for 3 days she insisted on giving the lifts so whilst if offer £20-£30 if I was person B I don't think person A should be expecting anything.

If it's work-related training, why is A not claiming mileage from their employer?
