13yo DS being mistaken as 7yo DS twin

Confusedmuch1 · 07/05/2023 00:07

My oldest DS is still mistaken for an 8yo. Youngest DS is about to turn 8 and people assume they're twins.
Ds2 is normal height/size for their age. Ds1 is slightly taller but similar build. No signs of puberty starting at all.
Should I be worried?

OP, I see lots of people trying to reassure you. Please take your child to a endocrinologist. My niece was tiny and everyone was telling my brother that she would just grew. Instead once they brought her to a paediatrician then endo she was found to be GH deficient. She was 125cm at 12, now she's 18 and 168cm (5'6''). Without growth hormone her final height was estimated at 140cm. Sorry but this needs to be checked asap. Prof Dattani sees patients privately at great ormond street hospital and he's very good

I think most people agree this should be checked out, 4ft at 13 is really tiny

AtlasSix · 08/05/2023 12:58

4’0” is tiny for a 13 year old.

He may just be a very late developer, but I’d take him to the GP and ask to have him checked out. Just in case there’s something else going on.

likeloo · 08/05/2023 13:09

That seems unusual, you’d think there would be a huge difference obviously between the two

purpleme12 · 08/05/2023 13:23

If you say he's always been small, was this not picked up at primary school when they did that height/weight check? What did they say?

Is there a reason you've not noticed this might be unusual before now?
I just think it's very small for a parent not to have thought before now....

how big is he though? you must see hes small and hasnt grown for years.

for reference my 12y old(13 in august)is 5ft 9 and 11st 8,size 9 shoe(he still in y7)

hes half way through puberty already.

bad skin, smells, growth in private area/armpits etc. voice had been squeaky for a few months so we are on that stage
he started at 11 which did take me back a bit as i knew he was big but didnt expect puberty so early as his older brother started at 13

he was a giant born though 29 inches and 11lb10oz

Why did you feel the need to post about how large your child is on a thread where a mother has expressed some concern about how small her child is. 🙄

She means well... She just wonders why the OP didn't see that her child is very small, just as she has seen her child is very tall... Being very tall can just a much be worrying as being very small

He's 4'0“ and 4.5stone. He's always been small, but all my kids have.

Wow! My teenage DS has always been small for age, enough they were seriously considering growth hormones, and was 12-15 cm taller at that age.

I wouldn't be surprised if the height isn' correct

It might be, if he's the size of his 7 year old brother. Bizarre that his Mum would have had to have this fact pointed out to her, though.
Personally, as op hasn't interacted with the thread at all, I have my doubts about the whole tale.

maybe we don't want to worry about it, so deny the obvious?

Exactly what I was thinking about doubts.
It just sounds too strange to be true, that a parent wouldn't have realised this before now

Do you mind if I ask you some questions about your DS and how tall he is now?
(Sorry for hijacking the thread op)

BHRK · 08/05/2023 07:13

You need to look up the Royal College of Paediatrics growth charts and check where he is on there

I’ve already done that for the OP and his height doesn’t register on the scale for his age. He’s well, well below the 0.4 centile.

KateyCuckoo · 08/05/2023 20:38

I reported the thread but @MNHQ obviously think it's genuine. Bizarre!

illiterato · 08/05/2023 21:00

To be fair, it might be a joke thread to draw out all the "tall skinny child " braggers, of whom there are many.

DS plays rugby and at every tournament there is "that" kid where everyone is joking that we need to see a birth certificate because they are MASSIVE , but if MN is to be believed 6 ft 12 years olds are ten a penny.

SocialLite · 09/05/2023 02:57

@Rubyrubyrubyrubyy no problem! He's not 14 and a half, and always going to be small, but he's had a good growth spurt and is 157 cms now- which is thankfully taller than me at last.

His friends all tower above him though, and he's still only a shoe size 5 bless him! 😂 He's formed a great double act with a friend that's just over a foot taller than him, so you know- silver lining! He's also only 48kg and constantly teeters either side of the underweight line, but it's never for long.

Rubyrubyrubyrubyy · 09/05/2023 10:27

@SocialLite Thank you. Your son sounds like he is doing well 😁

I ask because my 16yo DS is 4"11 and not showing any signs of getting any taller. He has grown an inch in the last year. Puberty started age 11 so it's not delayed or anything.

May I ask at what point were growth hormones discussed and at what point were they happy that his stature is normal for him?

I'm 5" and dh 5"8, so we were never going to have tall children but his 12yo sib has almost surpassed him and 10yo sib is about 3" away from doing so. I do worry for him and wonder if his height falls within the realm of normal. I look at his peers and I dont think so.

It's been discussed at regular points through childhood, he's always been small and there have been other medical issues too. The decision they have at 12 was that if he hadn't shown signs of growing by 14 they would have to do it at that point- thankfully 13 was his year!
