smoke ruined item

So I leant my fairly expensive (£40ish mark) bamboo stretchy wrap to a friend who was having a baby. She never returned it for about 3 years, long after she stopped using it. I am pregnant again and have been asking for it back my whole pregnancy. She finally returned it literally a few days before I am due and it STINKS of smoke.
She is not a smoker, and before I lent it to her, she assured me no-one in her home was. I have since found out her husband does smoke but she didn't think it mattered as he "doesn't smoke in the house".
The stretchy wrap honestly smells so bad I have left it outside as it was making my house stink. I can't bear smoking, so accept I may be extra sensitive to it.

AIBU for feeling really pissed off about this? Not only has my wrap been ruined, but I am due to give birth imminently and really could do without the hassle and expense of buying a new one.
If it smelt of dog or curry or something I wouldn't mind so much, as I would feel happy just to wash it, but lots of studies show that harmful chemicals linger on fabrics even after washing and for an item which will literally cocoon my tiny newborn, I am just really uncomfortable with it.

YANBU. Tell her you won’t be able to use because it stinks and ask her to replace it.

Never lend her anything again.

Say what now?

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 06/05/2023 20:31

Did she never wash it in that whole time?

Even if she was a raging smoker and smoked while using it, as long as it was washed regularly, put away and they don't smoke in the house it wouldn't reek of it.

Weird.

mydoghasanattitude · 06/05/2023 20:32

YANBU to be annoyed. I'd want her to offer to pay something towards the purchase of a new one, but I might not feel comfortable asking, honestly. I might hint by mentioning again that it stinks and you're not comfortable using it, but I wouldn't count on her offering money.

I'd never loan her anything again, after this. She was too slow to return it, and now that she has, it stinks! Two very good reasons to not loan things out even to a so-called friend.

Dilemma19 · 06/05/2023 21:51

Honestly after 3 years why would you even want it back. I always think with kids items, be prepared to give it away and not ask for it back!

GrazingSheep · 06/05/2023 21:53

What have you said to her?

Smartiepants79 · 06/05/2023 21:55

Can it not be washed?

Bk1000 · 06/05/2023 21:58

it is annoying but she probably can’t smell the smoke on it and thought it was fine. When I lived with my ex who smoked outside I didn’t really notice the smell of smoke much but since he’s moved out I can tell how bad everything he’s been near stinks of smoke. Even just touching things he’s touched gets the smell on my hands 🤢

HarrietSchulenberg · 06/05/2023 22:00

Wash it, line dry it and repeat if necessary. It will be fine. Just don't lend her anything again.

bloodywhitecat · 06/05/2023 22:04

Wait for a good spell of weather then wash it and leave it out on the line for several days.

pictoosh · 06/05/2023 22:09

Most people would bung it in the wash and never give it another thought.
Surprised you asked for it back after so long anyway.

Throckmorton · 06/05/2023 22:16

No way on earth would I wrap a baby in something ingrained with smoke, not even after washing.

Hankunamatata · 06/05/2023 22:23

Acidic solutions removes chemicals in smoke. I'd sock it in a vinegar solution, wash then wash again with vinegar as conditioner

nocoolnamesleft · 06/05/2023 23:59

She should pay to replace it.

Desperatelyseekingcommonsense · 07/05/2023 00:11

Wash it in vinegar/ bicarbonate of soda. A few times till the smell is gone.

Chemicals are everywhere. You know the process of turning bamboo into yarn involves a chemical which is a nerve poison?

NotMeSecretFormular · 07/05/2023 01:27

Just wash it. What would you do if baby sicked up on it or had a poo explosion? It's been a long time, surely you'd wash it anyway? Your baby will be exposed to plenty of "harmful chemicals" just by being outdoors at any given time. Bung the thing in the wash or buy new if you're so concerned, stop being silly.

TillyTollyTully · 07/05/2023 01:33

It's awful of her to return it unwashed and smelling of smoke...yuk. But seriously, you're being ridiculous.

Just wash it (using the washing powder and conditioner that is full of manufactured chemicals).

Kastri · 07/05/2023 01:57

You cant use it now, safer to buy a new one.Definitely dont wrap baby in it even if its washed, just bin it.
Tell her you had to and see if she offers to buy a new one.
