Pocket money for 11 year old

Just wondering how much pocket money is reasonable for an 11 year old (year 6)? He’s got a fair bit of freedom and likes going to Tescos after school or the community cafe for a cake and a slush puppy. DH and I have been giving him £10 a week to get a drink after school/snacks or a small toy. Just wondering what the norm is? Is this too much? Everything is so expensive now that even one drink in the shop can cost £2.

Wow, £10 a week is loads!!

my dd is nearly 11 but doesn’t want to work for pocket money so she doesn’t get any

Sirzy · 06/05/2023 19:11

It’s relative to what you can afford really.

my 13 year old can earn up to £10 a week.

saltandpepper86 · 06/05/2023 19:13

I suppose it depends what you earn, my 13 year old gets £35 a month

StreetSpirit3 · 06/05/2023 19:15

Thanks 😊 £10 does seem a lot but spread over 7 days of snacks doesn’t seem that much, everything is so expensive now but DH and I really have no idea what the norm is 💰He does do jobs around the house, we might have unfortunately set a precedent now 😂

My 13 yo gets £25 a month and doesn't spend it all

CheeseDreamsTonight · 06/05/2023 19:23

My 12 year old gets £5 a week. She has to budget and save if she wants something. Recently she has decided not to spend it all on snacks

minidancer · 06/05/2023 19:40

£5 a week here

shivawn · 06/05/2023 19:42

£10 a week sounds fine to me if you can afford it.

HoldingTheDoor · 06/05/2023 19:46

£10 a week is fine if you can afford it. I don't think it's excessive. Obviously many people can't, especially with the cost of living crisis.

I used to get £5 a week back in the early '90s. I feel rich now. £5 doesn't go far nowadays.

Figgygal · 06/05/2023 19:48

We wrestle with this
11yo yr6 ds
Goes to youth club every week which could be a fiver
Then he's got a club he goes to, wants v bucks and fifa points and never sure what he should pay for out of his money

Princessbananahamock · 06/05/2023 19:48

I do £1 per year old they are .

Sissynova · 06/05/2023 19:49

I don’t think £10 a week is excessive. Lots that age hang out in coffee shops etc, you wouldn’t even get a muffin and a small drink for £5.

FawnFrenchieMum · 06/05/2023 20:00

DD10 (year 6) gets £2.50 a week. She only spends it on sweets / snacks so far and I don’t want her having loads. Although she has about £30.00 in her account so isn’t blowing it all. This will increase is Sept when she goes to High School

DS16 gets £10 a week but often ends up getting more if he’s going somewhere specific / out for tea etc.

StreetSpirit3 · 06/05/2023 20:00

He’s very sociable, loads of friends always calling for him, he’s out pretty much every day (he’s 12 this year) Bigger purchases he would use Christmas or birthday money, he spends less time hanging out with DH and I now where we would pay for anything he needs if we took him out.

Ds gets £3 a week which feels pretty tight now 😂. They only ever really go to the local shop though (village so kids don’t really go to cafes) and can get drinks pretty cheap or nip home for squash. Social activities seem to centre on sports together in the park. He also gets extra bits bought for him so doesn’t seem to need much more. I think £10 a week is fine if you can afford it and that’s what he needs for social stuff.

Princessbananahamock · 06/05/2023 20:06

Just want to add I also have done this since my kids were little when they get to teens it goes from being paid on savings to their own account . When my eldest kids got to 18 they had over £1,500kmy eldest never touched his think he is at £15k now . My other had a holiday of a lifetime

Bk1000 · 06/05/2023 22:02

My kids 9&12 get £5 a week as long as their washing is away and their rooms are tidy at the end of the week. Ito goes into their bank accounts and at the end of the month they get to spend it or save it if they prefer. Sometimes the decide they rather have no pocket money than put their washing away though so they don’t always have the full amount at the end of the month!

Bk1000 · 06/05/2023 22:04

plus They all get a pound for the sweet shop every Friday which isn’t really pocket money just a treat.

DancingWithYourDog · 06/05/2023 22:12

£3 a week and he rarely spends it
£10 is loads!

anunlikelyseahorse · 06/05/2023 23:54

It depends if the £10 includes buying his own clothes?
Dd started getting an allowance at 13, ds will get an allowance at 13 too. Dd will get slightly more than ds because she has an extra monthly cost, (dsis and I remember being extremely peeved that we had the same allowance as our brothers but the added monthly expense of being female...I mean how the feck is that fair...still riles me now!!). apart from Christmas and birthdays I don't buy DD anything, any clothing/ toiletries/ magazine / outings eg cinema or cafe, etc comes out of her allowance she gets £30 a month (providing chores homework and picking clothes up off the floor are done).
