Every time I attempt to go vegan my bowels hate it I get very windy and loose stinky stools there's so much poop!!! Why does no one discuss this. I think I have to face that my body doesn't like an entire plant based diet. Does anyone else really struggle with veganism?

What is your motivation behind wanting to go vegan?

simbobs · 06/05/2023 15:48

For the kind of problems you describe you should really look into a low FODMAP diet. It could make all the difference. Failing that, food combining. I am omnivorous but go days with vegan food and have never had a problem.

Have been (mostly plant-based) vegan for years and not experienced this.

Have you made significant dietary changes all at once? Were you eating plenty veg, beans, pulses beforehand, or is it all brand new to your system?

And you don't need to eat lots of fruit. Veg is key.

Not all diets suit all people... perhaps being vegan just doesn't agree with you!

Do you have a histamine intolerance? I do, and most vegetables (and a good few fruits) cause me the same problems you mention, and eventually turn into extreme nausea.

It doesn't matter how slowly you try to turn vegan, if you do have a histamine intolerance, you'll unfortunately suffer no matter how quickly you replace meat and eggs with more veg.

Are you eating too much fruit? I’m intolerant to soy and I honestly thought I would die when I had soy milk. My bowels felt like they were about to explode, so I could never go vegan! Maybe you have a similar sensitivity?

Different people tolerate different foods. I’ve tried to be vegan many times but my body just can’t hack it. I just can’t digest well so many of the key foods.

This - it's perfectly normal for the first few months while your body adapts to more fibre.

Yeah just takes time to adjust then you’ll be fine.

Vegan for nearly 25 years. Kids (12, eight) are lifelong vegans. Never experienced your issues. How odd.
I don't think it's the vegan thing.

Just because you haven't had an issue doesn't mean others don't.
