Coronation boost to the economy

AIBU to think that even you have the royals, the boost to the economy the coronation will bring is worth it?
Although the cost of the coronation is huge, the revenue expected to be brought in is estimated at over £1 billion

You should really learn about how the economy works before making embarrassing statements like this.

Come on then. I don't live in London and I'm not a business owner. How will the coronation benefit me financially? Please don't say by the extra tax generated, because that won't go anywhere near offsetting the cost of the coronation and the loss brought about the extra bank holiday. Please educate me on the economy and explain how an ordinary person like me benefits.

So it benefits private business in London

How does it benefit anybody else economically

Many communities are having their own celebratory events. Which will bring income to local businesses.

More Income today and less tomorrow?

When no one has a lot of money what they spend today they can't spend tomorrow

Unless we get people coming in ( more tourists although London is normally full anyway ) or sell stuff made here abroad ( ha ha ) , or encourage those with savings to spend there is not real economic growth

Lots of pubs and catering suppliers across the whole of the uk coining it in due to coronation parties

JaninaDuszejko · 06/05/2023 15:13

Some industries will increase, hospitality are expected to do well out of it and souvenir makers (they had someone on Today saying the Jubilee increased their sales by 25% and they are expecting similar for the the coronation.). But a random extra bank holiday is expected to knock a billion off GDP.

Stopthatknocking · 06/05/2023 15:19

Hospitality in London might profit, but others will lose a fortune.
The company I work for will lose thousands, we can't charge our customers because we are closed for the bank holiday, but still have to pay all staff.

So not great for many businesses at all.

Eve · 06/05/2023 15:32

Just been into local town to do supermarket shop , lots of shops closed due to Main Street having a street party that had a few very wet & cold looking families braving it in deckchairs and umbrellas.

shops not taking revenue & having to pay staff!

Bonus was that the supermarket was very quiet!

I haven't spent an extra penny than a usual bank holiday.

xogossipgirlxo · 06/05/2023 17:10

Maybe if you own cafe or hotel in London. Rest of the UK will not benefit in any way. I can't see any celebrations where I live.

I checked the cost of the London hotel we normally stay at.

It was £100 tonight (Coronation date) - it is normally £150 - £200+ on a Saturday night.

They will do that to sell last minute rooms, the price would have initially been higher

@misssunshine4040 “something you’ve always been told to believe”.

The lie of the tourism myth of the monarchy summed to beautifully.

The four day week we’re lead to believe boosts productivity- in that case why would anything be knocked off GDP.

Because a 4 day working week doesn’t mean EVERYONE is off on the same day - it’s on a rota system so businesses aren’t shut for any extra time.

Why do you understand policies before berating them??

... in taxation, perhaps? You know, the money that goes into 'the pot', so the country can afford nice things such as the NHS, social benefits, salaries for teachers, road repairs, etc etc?

Stop it. Everything you’ve just mentioned is fucked. The royals do absolutely nothing to bolster anything. Freeloading toffs who need to be got rid of.

That’s not the rule, surely if you anre more productive it doesn’t matter for lots of companies …our IT provider chose to only open from Mon-Thurs - I guess someone should have told them they were doing it all wrong. 😂
