Animal testing for cosmetics restarted in UK

Surely I’m not the only one horrified by this? To be clear- this is NOT for medical purposes but for make up? Surely if industries have managed to safely produce make up, without using animal experiments in the last 25 years (while under EU guidelines), they can continue to do so?

That is truly disgraceful.I never buy make up tested on animals and if more people had any humanity they would boycott all companies who sell animal based or tested make up.unfortunately vanity goes before any care of the innocent animals tortured.

this is what we voted for. Brexit. we have the freedom to ignore humane laws now

HollyGolightly4 · 06/05/2023 09:25

Is there a list of brands that absolutely do not test on animals?

spottybug · 06/05/2023 09:26

To check I've understood- this is some sort of rule change so they can test the chemicals so workers are safe but not that the cosmetics are safe?

Nothing got do with Brexit - we are in fact copying EU law.

If anything, Brexit means we can opt out of this if we choose to!

Surely we just follow the procedures we’ve been using for the past 25 years to keep workers safe?

Does this mean that brands which are cruelty free currently will have to test on animals?

I never buy anything tested on animals (household or cosmetic) so already cannot buy any of the big make up brands or perfumes as they conduct testing abroad. You can currently assume that if you buy anything without the leaping bunny logo or other cruelty free statement you are supporting animal cruelty.

Well, weirdly, and I was surprised - this is actually bringing UK law in line with current EU law on chemical testing. If there had been any benefit of Brexit, I’d have hoped it might include not doing shit like this.

UnaOfStormhold · 06/05/2023 09:41

I meant the mythical sunlit uplands of Brexit... you know, sewage in the sea, businesses moving overseas and all the other benefits of sovereignty.

Tockomtele · 06/05/2023 09:42

I'm so disappointed by this.

polkadotdalmation · 06/05/2023 09:56

The Uk has better laws to protect animal rights than most European countries, so this retrograde step is disgraceful.

Resilience · 06/05/2023 10:25

Hugely disappointing. Most people probably won't even think to check! Just like lots of people who use Botox think it's vegan friendly but actually because it's classed as a medicine rather than cosmetics it has to be tested on animals.

Which is relevant how?

cocoloco117 · 06/05/2023 11:08

I presume it’s in order to sell into markets such as China that mandate animal testing.

ImAvingOops · 06/05/2023 11:18

This is because companies wanted to sell to emerging markets which insist on animal testing. Companies will do whatever is most profitable - when people in this country were a big market and cared about fur snd animal testing, companies moved away from it to reflect public opinion. Now the bigger markets are in places that don't care, the cosmetics producers don't care either!

Ah that could explain it sadly :-(

ThreeFeetTall · 06/05/2023 12:05

It's an EU law (in theory to make sure workers in make up factories aren't exposed to dangerous chemicals) that we could now opt out of. But in fact have gone along with...hmmm I smell money.

Also why has this only come out now when there is lots of other news(the coronation)

The whole thing stinks

AllAboutMargot · 06/05/2023 12:07

So disappointing. I genuinely thought we'd progress instead of regress when it comes to using and abusing animals for our own ends.

TooBigForMyBoots · 06/05/2023 12:13

I've just started a thread on this. I'll ask HQ to delete it.

Don’t you understand? If there’s something people don’t like they can just blame it all on Brexit now 🤣🤣

Greenfairydust · 06/05/2023 12:51

Absolute disgrace.

People should vote with their feet and refuse to buy any cosmetics/products that have been tested on animals.

TooBigForMyBoots · 06/05/2023 22:16

I was part of the campaign to ban it in the 80s and 90s. It is such a retrograde step. We have many known safe products. The idea that animals should be tortured for our vanity is repulsive.

As is the Conservative Party who have brought it back after decades of being fine doing without it.Angry

Suspific · 06/05/2023 22:20

I cannot understand the need for this. If we've managed for 25 years just because we can reintroduce it doesn't mean we should . Reinforces what an absolute bag of bollocks Brexit was. And how being part of Europe actually protected us from ourselves!!
