Tories lose over 1000 seats in local elections

Which was their damage limitation number so when they lost 800 they could say 'we've not done as badly as we feared'.

AIBU to be cracking open the champagne while they try to figure out how the hell they can put a positive spin on this?

The Tories are the party of self-interest and pocket-lining, not financial prudence.

And only supported by greedy, rich people who aren't affected by the cost of living crisis and health and education cuts.

They are cushioned by their wealth and are afraid a Labour government will increase the amount of tax they pay.

NerdyIsMyMiddleName · 06/05/2023 09:45

Sorry, I haven't RTFT and someone else has probably made this point, but this is despite their blatant attempt to tip the election in their favour by changing rules on photo ID. So I'm breaking open the champagne with you!

MrsHerculePoirot · 06/05/2023 08:40

Bet the tories all VERY glad the news has been taken over by the coronation today …

Quite.

I turned on the TV this morning, hoping that at least one of the news channels would be doing some in depth analysis of the results, but every channel was running a story about some old bloke popping into church to have a sparkly hat popped on his head by another old bloke, wearing a dress.

Most disappointing.

HumanBurrito · 06/05/2023 10:34

MerryMarigold · 06/05/2023 08:25

I didn't even vote. My seat is so incredibly safe that my vote is utterly worthless even with local elections and the roads covered in potholes. It's depressing.

Wirh seats being won or lost by one vote, you should have been out there. Mid Suffolk went Green by a landslide after being Tory heartland for 73 years 😂

itsgettingweird · 06/05/2023 10:38

Emotionalstorm · 06/05/2023 05:34

I think the conservative government will win the next general election. Local elections have little bearing on general elections. It's just a protest vote and people will be back because deep down people know that the conservative government are the party of financial prudence and competence.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

They systematically destroyed public services and sent us into a financial crash last year because the labour markets didn't trust as a county.

If that's financially aware to you I'd hate to think what incompetent is in your mind?

OlympicProcrastinator · 06/05/2023 06:34

I live somewhere where it was once said in our local paper, “you could put a blue rosette on a donkey and people would still vote for it” such was the Tory support. And now it’s gone Labour!

I only saw one placard outside someone’s house saying, “vote Conservative” in the whole area and someone had written, “are you mental?” on it in black marker 😂😂

🤣🤣🤣

phlebasconsidered · 06/05/2023 10:43

@MerryMarigold I bet you live the same place as me! Labour didn't even bother fielding candidates it's so safe. The whole area is either tory and/ ukip. It's racist, sexist and badically stuck in the 1950's but with shittier roads!

And our local MP is bloody Barclay who is about the shittiest MP on the planet.

WhiteFire · 06/05/2023 10:47

Locally (next council over) there is to be a recount on Tuesday as it was presumably so close. They are wanting to "look at it with fresh eyes".

Some seats have been won by a mere handful of votes.

RampantIvy · 06/05/2023 12:45

Our local MP is a Boris brown noser. She didn't support free meals for children on FSM, she didn't support the farmers, she doesn't do anything for the local community. She only got in because the local Labour MP decamped elsewhere and no-one knew her replacement. South Yorkshire used to be a complete sea of red with the occasional bit of orange, but we currently have three Tory constituencies, but I expect that will change at the next general election.

Florenz · 06/05/2023 12:57

I would expect a lot of the formerly dyed in the wool Labour areas that switched Tory in the last GE will go back to Labour. Bolsover for instance. Losing that seat made it absolutely clear that Corbyn was not fit for the job, they used to burn effigies of Thatcher there every bonfire night.

But there are some seats that will be a lot more close. Labour need do a lot of campaigning and actually talk TO people instead of AT them,

TooBigForMyBoots · 06/05/2023 13:16

Emotionalstorm · 06/05/2023 08:41

The UK could really use a financially literate person right now though.

And the last 13 years have shown they're not going to find one in the Conservative Party.

jgw1 · 06/05/2023 13:45

The Brexiteer Tories sold people what I thought was an obvious lie that they had been ignored for a long time because of the EU.

Now that we have left the EU and the same people are in power and only interested in enriching their mates, then those same voters are going to feel even more ignored.
Having the coronation now, might in the short term get the calamtous performance of the Tory party off the headlines, but in the long run will mean that people feel even less listened to, so will be more likely to vote against the Tories at the next general election.

jgw1 · 06/05/2023 13:46

Emotionalstorm · 06/05/2023 08:29

He worked for a PE fund so he at least knows how to run a successful business and make money. Keir is a career civil servant. Let's face it, civil servants aren't exactly known for having good work ethic or being overachievers.

Sunak is successful because he got lucky gambling with other people's money.

Ok.

jgw1 · 06/05/2023 13:48

BitOutOfPractice · 06/05/2023 08:37

Since when have barristers been “career civil servants”? 😂

You might like to make him sound like some dusty pen pusher in the back room of a council office, but he’s not. And even if he were, I’d consider that to be a far nobler calling than “working for a PE fund”. Because however you’d like to spin that as a career it doesn’t give me a single jot of confidence in the man’s integrity or business acumen.

But thanks @Emotionalstorm for giving me my first laugh of the day!

I was intending to inject some light humour into this thread on an otherwise dull and dreary day, but it seems someone has beaten me too it.

jgw1 · 06/05/2023 13:51

DeflatedAgain · 06/05/2023 08:48

Thinking about it I actually didn't get any post or door knockers promoting conservative this year. Only had multiple communications from labour (who I voted for) 🤔

Last time we had communication from every party. I think conservative got a little bit arrogant in my area and subsequently lost it.

I am thinking that I might offer my services to the Tories as a door knocker next time around.

I think I have the lines right
But Jeremy Corbyn,
We know what a woman is for.
Keir had a beer
It was only a small piece of cake.
Strong and stable.
Brexit means making us all poorer.

Could be fun.

TrickorTreacle · 06/05/2023 13:54

It's great that the Lib Dems have gained while the Tories have lost, but I still can't be doing with Labour. They're yet to know what the definition of a woman is.

You will be delighted to know that in the middle of the thread there was an enjoyable bout of, I have to vote Tory because they know what a woman is for.

Personally I am going to continue to vote Tory at every opportunity because they know how to deal with sewage and enrich water company bosses.

This is exactly why we need the Tories. All the other parties would have us believe that the old bloke in a dress was a woman.

Oh come on, we did that joke yesterday.

TrickorTreacle · 06/05/2023 14:13

Today @jgw1 is the coronation, so I'm not banging on about that. I'm still banging on about yesterday as I feel that is more important.

It's no "joke" about Labour and their GC issues.

The joke may be that no one can seriously look at what the government has done for the past 13 years and think those are the people are people who care about me and are going to keep me and my family safe.

Paul2023 · 06/05/2023 15:00

Not everyone had local elections. The vote turn out was pretty low anyway.

I wouldn’t pay too much notice about local election results.

I see Rishi is back from the Abbey 🙄

I can assure you that Tory HQ will most definitely be taking these results seriously. Especially the low turn out. Tories usually turn out come what may.

Paul2023 · 06/05/2023 15:03

The Tories have a big vote share amongst pensioners. Not all obviously, but a lot particularly in the south of England.
I can’t see them voting differently in a GE.

Businesses and rich people will continue to vote Conservative too. They want to hold onto their money.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/05/2023 15:04

They didn’t turn out yesterday though did they? Don’t they want to keep their council tax low? Poor weather is usually bad for labour. Tories come out rain or shine - usually.
