To be annoyed that some people get away with this at work?

I work in sales. It is quite a high pressured job, with lots of targets.

Our leads are given to us via a computer system, and they are all businesses that have already enquired about our service.

Two staff members, that our managers hold up on a pedestal and say we should all aspire to be like, have found a way to 'cheat' on the computer system, and basically are going on it at the start of their shift, doing their 'cheat', taking off all of the highest revenue leads, and keeping them for themselves. They are quite open about the fact that they do this, and think it's hilarious. Management are aware that they do it but it is just dismissed as "that's just how they like to work"

Two of us have asked our manager if we can also do the same thing and have been told a flat "no" and again that it's just how the other two "like to work". We have been told if we do the same thing it could result in disciplinary action.

We have to achieve the same targets and sales figures as the cheating staff members. It doesn't seem very fair at all. AIBU to be annoyed about this?

Tricky. Do those two have higher close rates on the same quality clients as the rest of you? If so, they should have the best leads because why waste quality leads on poor closers?

SpreadableCheeseOnEverything · 05/05/2023 14:00

No. Close rate is very similar for us all

Name change fail there?

wildfirewonder · 05/05/2023 14:34

What is the size of the company?
How long have you worked there?
Is there a HR department with proper policies, are there more senior managers?

I would raise a grievance, but only if I wanted to stay there, had been there more than two years, and thought the company would respond reasonably.

It is clearly grossly unfair.

Sounds like indefensible favouritism to me. You could try to socially shame them out of it, although that sounds like it's unlikely to work as they're proud of it.

I'd be tempted to call management's bluff - log on earlier than them and take the good leads for yourself. Work the hell out of them and do a better job than they do. When asked why say that you were told to aspire to be like those people, so you did. You thought that was the model they wanted.

I'd say that they'd have a hard time from HR putting you through a disciplinary process if there are two individuals they would actively avoid doing it for. If I'm wrong, it sounds like you might be better off looking for a new job anyway.
