Flying for holidays

Given we all know about climate change and the staggering emissions for a single flight, am I being unreasonable to wonder how people justify multiple flights and travel?

How do people justify owning cars? New clothes? Farmed meat and dairy? Importing out of season produce?

Climate change isn't caused by individuals going on holiday 3 times a year.

Having children
Having pets
Etc

I pay to offset my carbon emissions when I fly.

Plus I'm not willing to give up my favourite thing in life given that my personal emission load is insignificant in the scheme of it. I'm not giving up my travels when rich twats are buzzing about in their private jets every bloody day.

Interesting. I'm wrestling with it all. Struggle with knowing how catastrophic it all is yet feeling like I want to explore.

I'm not remotely willing to give up my holidays. Most years I fly once a year, but occasionally twice. Not excessive.

I already barely drive except when really necessary, and to the best of my knowledge I recycle as much as possible.

Northernsoullover · 05/05/2023 13:30

I don't drive. I use public transport for UK travel. I don't feel so bad about flying once a year.

rainraingoawaay · 05/05/2023 13:32

Plane travel is such a small part of emissions globally - and if you factor in all of the private jets etc passenger air travel is even smaller!

I feel zero guilt about taking multiple long haul flights a year, I actively look forward too them. I do what I can in other areas, but I'm not giving up my holidays when governments and world powers can't sort out the big things!

Also if you look into SAF - sustainable aviation fuel, that's some amazing progress in the commercial flying world.

I justify it because I don't own a car and never will (can't drive, live in London, no plans/desires to leave). I also don't have kids, only buy second and clothes, am vegetarian, so in every other way my carbon footprint is low and I like travel.

“We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly” Anne-Marie Bonneau

This is how I justify it. Anne-Marie’s quote can be applied to our environmental impact as a whole. Nobody is going to be perfectly carbon neutral, it’s not possible. So I buy good quality, second-hand clothes that will last, never buy fast fashion, eat a predominantly vegetarian diet, walk where possible, reduce my consumption of plastic packaging and recycle when using plastic is unavoidable. But I won’t compromise on air travel because there’s a wonderful world out there and I want to experience it.

That’s my imperfect contribution to climate action.
