AIBU to throw a pack of tissues at my manager's head?

My new manager is a sniffer, I hate this especially when they have a cold.
I can just about ignore the daily sniffing (not just a gental sniff either it can be very mucosy 🤢) when in the office but when we are on calls its very load and right in my ear.
I find it unprofessional and rude.
AIBU to launch a small pack of tissues across the desk divider and ask them to blow their nose??? 🤧

🤮 YANBU.
Vile habit. I’ve worked with sniffers, it turns my stomach listening to them.

MenoRageisReal · 05/05/2023 11:05

Sniffing is horrible for others around them.

I'd leave a pack of tissues on his desk rather than launching at his head first attempt. If that doesn't work feel free to launch a box with a couple of stones under the tissues Grin

Season0fTheWitch · 05/05/2023 11:23

YANBU. Maybe throw individual packets at a steady rate of one per minute. Much more annoying and likely to work than just one mega pack launched at them.

Luredbyapomegranate · 05/05/2023 11:26

That's horrible.

I wouldn't be so jocular. I would hand him the tissues saying, please blow your nose, it's really horribly to listen to and not terribly hygienic.

Backtoreality1 · 05/05/2023 11:32

YANBU but in his defence, sometimes blowing the nose just makes things worse as your body produces more mucous. As someone who had chronic allergies as a youngster and now get a runny nose and cough for weeks after any virus, I can sympathise with him a little.

icanneverthinkofnc · 05/05/2023 12:53

Oh god..I hate this too, left a job partly because I knew my filter was going to fail soon 🤣 it was my boss and he sniffed and snorted through client meetings where clients could be spending up to 100k. I caught a few looks of revulsion. I knew he had sinus issues, but I found it utterly unprofessional.

Whatabouteverything · 05/05/2023 12:56

I sniff occasionally as one of my tics. BUT it's a light airy sniff. If I felt mucusy or had a cold I'd blow nose before continuing with my tic routine. Unless he clearly has another issue I'd mention it! But then I'm ballsy and wouldn't really care if I offended someone as long as I worded it really politely. It also turns my stomach when people do this when it's really snotty and the same goes for people vigorously clearing their throat too. Gross.

Mariposista · 05/05/2023 13:02

Ughh, sniffing and snorting are revolting habits. Definitely offer the tissues.

Whatabouteverything · 05/05/2023 13:08

If you want to be tactful say 'oh gosh i keep sniffing too- is it hay-fever you've got? That's what's bothering me. Here's a spare pack of tissues' then just smile and walk off. If the hint doesn't take from that maybe try again a week later -'oh such a shame that sniffly nose is still bothering you' etc. Polite and kind sounding words so you won't get told off if he gets offended but make your point clear. Chances are lots of people are thinking it but aren't saying it.

Also maybe wear earphones and when he asks why just say you struggle with sniffling coughing type noises and there seems a lot in the office at the moment.

Bigpinkslippers · 05/05/2023 13:09

It's funny most people have presumed boss is male. Correctly I might add.
Is the tendency to sniff/snort more prevalent in men?
Thinking about it I know 3 people who do this and are all men 🤔

It's vile and I didn't go on a second date once because the guy did this.

So, so, so vile. It makes me nauseous and I would have to say something in your situation because I would start to feel actual rage.

On your other question, I find men are less sensitive to their surroundings and in general feel their body had a "right" to do it's thing. E.g manspreading

Hit the nail on the head

JandalsAlways · 05/05/2023 13:20

Do it. Before covid, I had a colleague who wouldn't stop coughing (bit of a martyr type), I went and bought her a whole 100 pack of face masks 🤣 I can't stand sniffing! It would give me the rage

LlynTegid · 05/05/2023 13:23

Another argument in favour of working from home at least some of the time.

YANBU to object to it.

GimmeSleep · 05/05/2023 13:26

I used to work with someone who did what only be described as "snot gobbling" 😣

I wish I'd thrown tissues at them 😩

lalalalalalaleeee · 05/05/2023 13:36

I work with a throat clearer... you know when they make like a hawk noise to clear the phlegm
It knocks me sick, especially when he is stood right behind me!

BotherhoodOfMan · 05/05/2023 13:50

Oh no, sympathies. I used to work with a sniffer for years and I used to want to murder him. 9 years on I can remember the exact rhythm of sniff-sniff-sniff-back of throat hoik (snot gobbling is exactly it) and repeat.. To be fair to him I think the violent air con in the office was exacerbating it. Fortunately headphones and Motorhead exist.

I have seen him occasionally since I left and I think of him quite fondly now, probably because I don't have to listen to it any more (and amazement that he remains unmurdered as he is still working in that same office).

I have never heard a woman do it, maybe we are socialised out of even thinking of it.

mynewusername2023 · 05/05/2023 13:54

I'd be tempted to buy many packs of tissues, in all sizes and forms, and cover their desk with them. Making sure to include pocket packs so they can take them to meetings.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 05/05/2023 14:37

I was wandering hone from shopping the other day and some delightful soul decided to blow their nose without out a tissue. I'm surprised the woman he was with didn't pull a disgusted face. If I'd have been closer I would have probably said yuck.

That is too descriptive, yet describes it perfectly. 🤮🤮🤮
