ALL vacuum cleaners are more-or-less crap for heavy duty vacuuming.

I don't know what I haven't tried. They all underperform eventually and break down before their time.

I have a Henry and a handheld shark thing.
was frustrated with dog hair on the rugs so I bought a vax air reach (I think).
game changer. It has a motorised spinning brush and it’s just great.
rely hard to use the hose bit though so I use Henry for that.

That's exactly what my Miele does when all the filters need a good scrub.

15- 20 mins taking it apart, washing it all out under the tap (basically everything except the hepa filter) and once it's all dry it's like new again until the next time.

I've never let it get to the overheating stage again since the first time as it's pretty obvious it needs doing once you start losing suction.

It has swallowed the teeny tiny bits of lego many times. When you say filters, which ones are you washing? I have washed the little spongey bits. Could you show me which part I need to remove perhaps? 😊It was a fine machine until this happened and hasn't quite ground to a halt.

Another Henry convert here! I can't believe how good it is. I've had so many vacuums but this one tops the lot. My upstairs carpets look new. I got mine in Asda at Xmas for £100. It is heavy and sometimes gets stuck on corners but it's a small price to pay for the performance.

YABU. My Hetty has spoiled all of the lightweight cordless models for me. I think I got her before they lowered the wattage, 10 or 11 years ago.

Are we likely to ditch the EU directive any time soon?

I inherited an old Henry from my dad and he's pulled up the laminate flooring more than a few times. He's fallen out of the car, rolled down the stairs, been left out in the rain and is still going strong.

For dog hair on carpet, I flick the carpet sweeper bit on and then then drag it across the carpet to rake it all up. Then switch back to hard floor mode and hoover it up. But the absolute best thing for dog hair is this rubber broom from The Range.

Are you seriously telling me your Sebo vacuum broke ? They are invincible. Best cleaner ever !

Sudeko · 05/05/2023 08:22

I had a rubber broom - it was fine until the spiky bits literally disintegrated in my hands.
The Sebo never even got going for me. It is probably best for houses which are always immaculate and need that little sweep over for a couple of minutes a day.
I'm now torn between Charles and Henry and wondering why there are never good offers on when I finally start looking for things to buy 🤔

I have a Miele I think it might be cat and dog, it’s at least 7 might be ten years old. It is still going well although copes less well than before if the bag is full & has done a lot of diy building mess.

DRS1970 · 05/05/2023 08:50

You need to maintain them to ensure continuing good performance - keeping hoses and attachments clear and serviceable, cleaning or replacing filters...

Hocuspocus99 · 05/05/2023 08:50

The Sebo x4 and x7 are heavy duty cleaners and pick up everything ! I would never get anything else . I’ve used all the others as I’m a cleaner and Henry isn’t all it’s made out to . Lots of dragging it around , aching back . But pick up good on hard floors but not so great on carpets .

Miscellaneousme · 05/05/2023 08:56

All bagless vacs degrade really quickly imo. Get a Henry and you’ll not regret it.

somewhereovertherain · 05/05/2023 09:05

We have an old Dyson and a fairly new shark with maintenance and some replacements parts both going strong.

wouldnt buy a new Dyson as don’t like his politics. but will keep our old one going until it becomes uneconomical to repair.

shark had it 3 years no issues except self imposed by missing one cleaning area on it. Cleared that and it’s like new.

we use the Dyson up stairs and the shark downstairs.

booboobidoops · 05/05/2023 09:17

Henry!

Had ours 16 years and he is still absolutely brilliant. Total workhorse.

We have an 21 year old sebo upright. Invincible. I will keep it running till I die if I can.

Bought a new hand held shark and it is useless.

There is nothing energy efficient about machines that don’t work. How can it save energy to run a weak vacuum across the same spot 5 times rather than efficiently zip around with a strong one?

user1497207191 · 05/05/2023 10:09

I use an old Miele Cat & Dog one that is at least 10 years old, and I use it every day. I've had no problems with it at all and very powerful suction.

I've got a Henry at our office and find it awful, very poor suction compared with the Miele.

Before we bought the Miele, I went through several others but didn't like any of them, either poor suction or they broke within a year or two.

Sudeko · 05/05/2023 15:07

Could anybody explain how I can properly clean the filter on a Miele please?

This is for bagged, cat and dog, 1900W Miele.
Open bag compartment, remove bag. At back (right side on my model) there's a grill cover. Open it and flat white filter is inside. Every box of bags comes with a filter that needs to be cut to size but if you don't have a new one, try washing and drying the old one before reusing.

When we moved my mother in law used her Henry, then two days later in the same empty house I went over it with my cordless shark and the filth I picked up was shocking.

There does seem to be something about them working great for maybe the first 6-12 months then just meh.

Our shark was the same! Couple of months it seemed great then it turned into the worst vacuum I've have ever experienced with clogging, not picking up properly, falling over all the time. Still have it and will use it until it dies, but curse at it every time I use it. In 30+ years I have never had problems like this with any other vacuum I have owned.
