Fancy a Chinese?

Now I know this is ridiculous but it might give you a laugh.

American people on tik tok have discovered that we call it ' a Chinese' rather than 'Chinese food'.
There has been so many stitches of videos from mainly English or Irish people saying things like 'I haven't had a Chinese in ages' or 'I really fancy a Chinese tonight'. There are many that are actually calling it racist which is we all know is rubbish!

They are also slating the food itself for not being authentic Chinese and having dishes like curry sauce and chips. Cant argue with that one we all know its not authentic but its bloody lovely.

Has it ever even crossed your mind that people would consider this racist?

(Search A Chinese British on tik-tok there are so many videos on this.)

It's just an abbreviation - a Chinese [takeaway] - common to other cuisines, e.g. 'We're going to an Italian [restaurant]'. As for the food not being authentic - the restaurant will produce what sells, most likely a range of dishes varying in authenticity.

How do.Chinese people feel.abouti
Icing think it's up.to American Peoople on TikTok to be offended on behalf of Chinese people
Either feel the same about indian, takeaways?
Also how do they feel about the craze for American Diner type restaurants that we had in the 90,s and 00,s

x2boys · 04/05/2023 12:37

I don't think*

CurlewKate · 04/05/2023 12:37

I though that in general people didn't say "a Chinese" any more? Nobody I know would.

Gtsr443 · 04/05/2023 12:39

See Goodness Gracious Me and "Going for an English".

For what it's worth chips and curry sauce is fusion food at its finest.

Curseofthenation · 04/05/2023 12:41

@Arginalia has hit the nail on the head. How

Crikeyalmightey · 04/05/2023 12:41

God. Something else to worry about offending folk with. 🙄

augustusglupe · 04/05/2023 12:41

I thought this was a thread about Gavin and Stacey 😂 but no, I've never found it racist.

Curseofthenation · 04/05/2023 12:41

is this not obvious? I worry about people 😂

Sissynova · 04/05/2023 12:41

As PP said it’s short for ‘a Chinese takeaway’. It’s not racist.

Are you suggesting that the inauthentic food is racist too? I’ve only known a Chinese takeaway to be run by people of Chinese origin so I don’t see how it’s racist if that’s what they choose to make and sell.

Clutching with this one.

Skybluepinky · 04/05/2023 12:43

Taken on by people desperate to get views and likes!

mrsbyers · 04/05/2023 12:43

I don’t think it’s racist and neither do the Chinese people I know , the old term which was racist chi£nkies causes more offence

Ponoka7 · 04/05/2023 12:44

For what they've done to chocolate, they don't get to comment on any description we use.

NotAnotherBathBomb · 04/05/2023 12:45

Americans have a lot of opinions on how other cultures should do things.

I'm from the Caribbean and due to the mix of ethnicities, none of our food would be considered 'authentic', it's been adapted by the people that brought it here based on ingredients that were available. Chinese food is a classic example. Even when new restaurants are opened by people newly form China, they adapt the recipes to suit the palate and preferences of the population 💁🏽‍♀️

Go figure

Theresasnakeinmaboot · 04/05/2023 12:46

Is a full English just as bad? 🧐

Tinktravels · 04/05/2023 12:50

Thankfully I've seen a few people who are actually Chinese make videos to do say no they do not find it offensive.

Americans just can't seem to grasp the concept of anyone doing anything different to them.

it’s something that’s isn’t racist but almost sounds racist if you over think it.

Me too!!

PollyAmour · 04/05/2023 12:54

Saying you are getting a Chinese takeaway is not racist. Calling it a shortened slang term for Chinese is.

shammalammadingdong · 04/05/2023 12:54

Do Americans think their version of Chinese is any more authentic? (they probably do).

Chinese food is different in every country, it changes to suit the local produce and tastes. Chinese food in Italy, IReland, Australia etc all very different to each other. Very rarely what you would get in China.

Tinktravels · 04/05/2023 12:54

Just to clarify the videos I've seen of them slating the food aren't the racism related ones. Just saying it looks bland beige and disgusting.
They don't know what they are missing! 😆

We always say a Chinese. I've seen people on Facebook call it a ch*nky which really doesn't sit right with me :(

Tigofigo · 04/05/2023 12:57

I watched some of the "unboxing" videos and I have to say it resembles nothing I've ever ordered from a Chinese takeaway (except perhaps the crispy beef, which I've not had in decades)!

It was mostly chips and various fried coated chicken things with some really gross looking rice, covered in gloopy sauce.

Reality · 04/05/2023 12:58

We had this on here once, years and years ago, a thread got completely derailed because someone took offence at the OP going out for a Chinese.

Also ‘mad as a box of frogs’ is offensive to the French.

That's straight up racist.
