AIBU to be freaked out by open window?

We’ve had the builders round for a couple of days and they’ve finished now. They were just doing some work in the living room, and had no need to go upstairs at all. We’ve been out most of today and yesterday.

We’ve just found one of the front upstairs windows open.

DP is convinced there is some nefarious motive, like they want to break in during the night.

I do think it’s a bit weird as I can’t think of any reason for them to go upstairs, let alone open a window. There’s a bathroom downstairs. If they needed to feed a cable from outside they could have used the front door.

AIBU to be creeped out, or can anyone think of an explanation? I probably will just text the builder shortly and ask, but wondering what others thought!

Maybe they wanted to ventilate. Windows ventilate more effectively when you open more than one to get a flow of fresh air. I never just open one window, I’ll always open a few. They probably forgot to close it.

ColdHandsHotHead · 03/05/2023 19:26

Ventilation for sure. Were they plastering or painting?

3dogsandarabbit · 03/05/2023 19:29

They're hardly likely to break in during the night when you're there, especially as they've been doing work for you and you know who they are.

It will be for ventilation.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 03/05/2023 19:30

Because it's hot, surely?!

Skybluepinky · 03/05/2023 19:30

Y don’t u ask them?

TheRookie · 03/05/2023 19:30

Break in through a front upstairs window? Nonsense. If they've been there all day, they would have taken a key or something if they had other intentions 🤣🤣

Ventilation for sure. I think you're being a bit ridiculous

TheBerry · 03/05/2023 19:32

Thanks guys, I’m sure that’s what it was.

The door to that room was closed, the way we left it, but maybe they just closed it again when they left and forgot to shut the window.

Is there,a back story with your husband? No one would seriously think they’d try to break in via an upstairs window. Never mind the fact you’d spot it and close it. Is there a reason you noth didn’t jump to the obvious conclusion of it’s hot so they opened the windows?

VeronicaTimeTurner · 03/05/2023 19:33

What work were they doing? I agree with the others - ventilation, and they forgot to shut it when they shut the door.

Jojobees · 03/05/2023 19:33

My first thought was ventilation, not burglary.
I wouldnt text and ask either.

Surplus2requirements · 03/05/2023 19:34

@Surplus2requirements they were doing some damp proofing and plastering. Obviously it was just for ventilation 🤦🏻‍♀️ DP got me paranoid. He’s known some people who seem nice do some messed up stuff so he’s always overly wary I think.

Absolutely ventilation then. Plastering is the equivalent of throwing a couple of buckets of water at your wall.
Plasterers use ventilation to control the length of workability, usually vent to shorten drying time.
It's worth you trying to have higher than normal level of ventilation, preferably a through draft for 3 or 4 days to avoid condensation

@Surplus2requirements thank you, yes, I will.

I have rated myself YABU 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
