To give ds watered down 'sugar free' Ribena?

We give ds who is 11 months old watered down sugar free Ribena. There is hardly enough ribena to cover the bottom of his cup and we fill it with water. It doesn't even really taste of Ribena. Now MIL is complaining there is far to much sugar in it and to just buy the proper baby juice.

Surely if its sugar free there is no problem or is the MIL right?

baby juice is made from squeezed babies btw, so not very nice

colacubes · 17/02/2008 19:46

i agree with wallace, bloody awful squeezed babies! But kayzisbroody, if thats all your MIL has to worry about concerning her grandchild, I think you are doing a good job, and yes there are all kinds of baby juices, but as long as you are careful with the sugars/e nos etc baby gets, I wouldnt worry about it to much.

My dds had very watered down pure fruit juice (orange/ apple) but not drunk from a bottle as it's not good for their teeth.

Emprexia · 17/02/2008 20:33

my son drinks the flavoured volvic water out of a sippy, i only ever give him diluted squash if i've run out.

I checked with both the HV and the Dentist and they both said it was fine.

LIZS · 17/02/2008 20:37

Bearing in mind he probably doesn't really need extra drinks yet amyway, persist with water. When he is thirsty he will drink it. They all dribble it to start with . First time ds had Heinz baby juice , at a party, he threw up ! Doesn't "no added sugar" hi-juice also contain articifial sweeteners ?

Wilkie · 17/02/2008 20:38

I use very dilute high juice in a beaker. No prob with it.

Dpn't buy baby juice - waste of money.

Peachy · 17/02/2008 20:44

Well, it's not the best option- my kids won't all have water so its not always easy (took me 8 years to get a glass into ds1 (sn) and if I send water to school it just comes back with him- ds3 also sn, just spits water out). DS2 is fine with it. BUT if you give ribena, give the normal version- the sugar free version makes me feel very, very ill indeed and I wouldn't give it to my worst enemy in case they react the same. Also, a limited amount of sugar is, imo, far better than sweetener muck any day.

But actually I think if you need a flavouring, diluted cranberry is the best option. And the kids love it.

i would agree baby juice is a ripp off - we used to buy organic fruit squash but now we use robinsons squash {sugar-free} but always very dilute

sweetkitty · 17/02/2008 20:47

Mine have always had fresh orange, apple or pineapple juice diluted with water, about 1 part jucie 8 parts water, much cheaper than baby juice as well.

kayzisbroody · 17/02/2008 20:50

I'm going to just give him diluted fruit juice from now on. I just hope that the HV hasn't told many other people to give their dc Ribena

Aspartame is really bad for everyone especially babies, it's totally chemical and when it breaks down in the body it contains really bad things (that's the technical term!), one is linked to brain damage, another can cause abnormalities in foetuses and the other is formaldehyde (the stuff they embalm dead people with).

I give the baby water, and dd's have full sugar high juice diluted, usually the own brand ones are better.

giddybiddy · 17/02/2008 21:26

Completely agree about avoiding sugar free drinks which are full of chemicals and so bad for children, let alone babies. I think there has been some research into aspartame being carcinogenic. The dd's (including 15 month old) have water or apple juice which I dilute a lot for the baby. I sometimes give her orange juice, again very diluted, if she is a bit constipated as it gets things moving. I think you are only supposed to give babies diluted fruit juice with food as then it maximises iron and vitamin absorption, otherwise stick to water. Rocks cordials do organic squashes for older children which are good, but I wouldn't give to a baby.

ALMummy · 18/02/2008 19:47

Why not just water? Both DC have juice with meals every now and then and water the rest of the time in their water bottles. We all drink loads of it. Never given my kids anything else as an every day drink and they dont ask for juice except with meals.

mumbear · 18/02/2008 20:34

Have u tasted the baby juice its soooooooooooooooooooo sweet. its awful i think thats more likely to give them a sweet tooth than watered down ribena!
