Would it be wrong to lie at work

I've been in a job for 4 months. It's in residential care and I'm a senior carer there, I don't mind it, love the residents and most staff are nice but some very cliquey.
We're 90% females, a lot of the staff socialise together out of work, go on nights out etc. And message each other.
I've got a few that I have a chat with but sadly not made any friends in my 4 months there. Don't get invited to anything and I think people generally think I'm nice but don't really want to be my friend.
It's always the same friends working together on shifts and it can be very bitchy and two faced.
Anyway I've got an interview tomorrow for a lead senior/assistant manager in another home. It pays more and it's only 15 minutes from my home whereas my current one is 50 minutes.

Anyway if I get it, I'm thinking of just telling them I'm moving house and need something closer so that's why I'm leaving. I know the manager and deputy do like me, they have said I'm hardworking. I feel bad letting them down but I want progression in life, need a higher salary and the commute is ideal. I know they will be pissed off even if I'm just a number to them at the end of the day.

I just can do without all the gossip if people find out I've got this promotion as it will inevitably invoke some gossip.
I know it's not good to lie, but I just feel that it'd be easier here.

I'm quite quiet and I know that one or two of them will be gossiping saying how has she got a promotion (I might not even get it!)

In March I was off sick with stress for a couple of days and honestly the whole home knew when I got back.

I don’t think you need to lie. Just say the new job is closer to your home. You don’t need to mention the pay and promotion.

I would generally advise not lying at work. Especially as you are going for a role with more responsibility. Honesty is really important in the work you do.

Looooop · 02/05/2023 21:11

Yeah, you're right. It's just such a gossipy workplace, as I say I was off for a couple of days and then upon returning the entire home knew my business. I will just mention the commute then.

Seems unnecessary to lie. Could you just say the shorter commute will save you time and money if you are concerned about them being judgmental about the promotion part.

NeatCompactSleeper · 02/05/2023 21:12

Closer to home is all you need to say really.

If you're not overly close to them, are they really going to bother discussing it much?

banew · 02/05/2023 21:12

Also if you're leaving what does it matter what they think.

M0rT · 02/05/2023 21:12

Will they need to send you a tax form or anything that will show your address hasn't changed?
I would just say you got a job in a home closer to your house, no need to say it's a promotion but don't lie either.
If they question why your moving so quickly say the cost of commuting is way less in the new job and you need the money.

Looooop · 02/05/2023 21:13

Yeah, it is unnecessary I know. I will just say I've found something similar very close to my house.

Yeah, I admit it was daft. It doesn't matter what they think indeed, I only care about the management's opinion. But I just know how gossipy and catty some people can be there, anyway I'll just need a thicker skin. Especially if I'm going into a higher role, people will dislike me just for that.

Completely unnecessary. People leave workplaces all the time - I suspect particularly in residential care, and you (and all others) will soon be forgotten.

Tell them about the potential promotion, and be proud of it.

Dotcheck · 02/05/2023 21:18

You don’t have to lie. Just tell them it is a good opportunity closer to your home.
