What’s happened to GCSE study leave?

No study leave at all at DS school. Even once exams start. School say pupils grades are higher if they stay at school. Overall this is probably true but I’m thinking probably not for higher achievers.

What’s the arrangements at your school?

It hasn't existed for many years

SocialserviceswillTheyhelp · 02/05/2023 19:57

No study leave.

And 22 fucking exams .
How utterly ridiculous is that.

This.

rainraingoawaay · 02/05/2023 19:58

I'm 30 and we didn't have study leave when I was in school! Would have been useful for the 30 odd exams during the year 😂

nicknamehelp · 02/05/2023 19:58

Ds didn't even get any for Alevels just the way it is now

ShanghaiDiva · 02/05/2023 19:59

Dd is at private school and they have study leave.
I invigilate at a state school, no study leave.

Lostinalibrary · 02/05/2023 20:00

Still happens in my children’s school.

Which is what makes me think that motivated kids do better studying at home, away from distraction…

I think it's awful. My daughter has to go to classes in the morning even when she has an exam in the afternoon. Feels unfair to me as you need a bit of a breather before an exam. I won't be making her go in after half term.

noblegiraffe · 02/05/2023 20:03

Govt said that you couldn't have study leave until exams actually start because some schools were kicking out their worst pupils around Easter for "study leave" and they were causing havoc in town centres.

Then schools held onto pupils for longer and longer until now they're pretty much in till the bitter end.

cakeorwine · 02/05/2023 20:04

Exams carry on to near the end of June. Are your children expected to be in school all that time?

Schools I know let pupils stay at home after half term and then just go in for the exams from then on.

My daughters school expects her in fulltime until 10th June.

Yep - right up til the bitter, bloody end!! And no prom if you don’t show up .

No study leave for DS and hour long booster sessions specific to the exam immediately before the exam starts. I think this is best for DS otherwise he probably wouldn't do much but I imagine some kids would rather be left to get on with it.

The only kids at his school that get study leave are the naughty ones as they learnt last year those ones just ran around disrupting everything in between exams because they didn't give shit. They are only allowed on school grounds for the exams and then escorted off the premises.

Schools up here let their pupils stay at home from after half term

megletthesecond · 02/05/2023 20:06

No timetable after half term. But there are booster sessions before every exam and after school.
DS is crap at self revision, he wants to be in school. He's even going in over half term.

We're in the North East so not Southern based.

Skybluepinky · 02/05/2023 20:08

Even 14 years ago our school stopped study leave, their schools results improved once they did and they haven’t gone back to it, no different for high achievers.

Where is "up here" ? because we are North East and no study leave at all at DSs school, I dont think it is area specific.

Exams aren’t shorter?! They’re roughly the same as they were when I sat them 25+ years ago.

We do have study leave at our school (independent) for Y11 and Y13.
