To think the coil shouldn’t be this sore?

Mirena fitted a week ago due to total absence of periods. Consultant said it was exceptionally complex, something with my cervix- tilted womb and very narrow cervix. Needed an injection into my cervix and consultant said of the hundreds she’s fitted that was one of the worst.

Was told the coil was the best and safest option for management of not having periods.

Admitted to hospital on Saturday night with suspected endometritis /inflmammation of the womb or a UTI from insertion. Kept in until Sunday evening. Discharged with cocodamol, coamoxiclav. Told to keep the coil in and should settle.

’Some level of pain for a few weeks is inevitable.’

I’m not in a minor amount of pain, I’ve been bent double and unable to sleep. It’s a sharp, tearing pain across my bikini line and into my sides/groin. I’ve checked the threads, still there, very little bleeding but I’m so, so sore. Can’t bear to bend at the waist.

NHS are saying they won’t prescribe pain relief and to try to manage it with paracetomal and ibuprofen.

I don’t know what to do. Should I persevere, or ask them to take it out?

Take it out.

WolfFoxHare · 02/05/2023 18:18

I’d ask them to take it out, it sounds awful. Poor you!

Kyse · 02/05/2023 18:22

Doesn't sound right
I have a tilted uterus and no DC and am on my 4th coil
Painful for 24hrs or so, I would say like severe period cramps but then it's settled fine

custardbear · 02/05/2023 18:23

Ouch! They can cause uterine perforation - it's rare but can happen. Perhaps call the non emergency number and let them know how difficult it was to fit - is your GP surgery still ope ? Assuming not but would call them first if they are

Sounds hellish. If this was men there would be proper anaesthetic and no suffering.

Take it out. Try the mini pill. Everyone I know has had nothing but absolute trauma with the coil one way or another - either constant bleeding or terrible pain. I would never have one. I’m convinced there’s some sort of incentive for the nhs to try to persuade every woman to have one.

Titled uterus here too. Periods and ovulation are definitely more painful even now years on from having it put in, but nothing of the kidn you describe. I'd get it removed.

Weird, I have found it great (except for slightly more painful periods and ovulation), but overall great birth control. I hated stuffing my body with synthetic hormones. Everyone is different I guess.

The mirena has the same hormone in it as the mini pill. (I know the copper coil is hormone free). I have no choice but to stuff synthetic hormones into my body or I’d be dead - I have a pituitary tumour, lupus, Addison’s and all sorts, I rely on medication including HRT and steroids to keep me alive. It’s not all bad! But I appreciate we’re all different.

I have a copper coil. So no hormones here.

Exactly, we are all different. There's a lot of scaremongering surrounding the coil which is unnecessary and making women disregard what can be a perfectly good choice for them.

I insisted they took mine out - I was in agony, and when they went in for it, my uterus was trying to expel it. This was after 6 days.
