Nursery charging for bank holidays

Anniessong · 02/05/2023 13:18

Just found out nursery charges for bank holidays on a day that child would usually attend. They close on bank holidays so we couldn’t use the day if we wanted to. Do other nurseries do this? Feel very cross about it but is it fair?

You need to check your contract. Mine provides for this so I suspect it may be usual.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 02/05/2023 13:20

Standard practice

mynameiscalypso · 02/05/2023 13:21

Yes, ours does. I think it's fairly standard.

bettymoo212 · 02/05/2023 13:22

Yes, normal. They still have to pay their staff.

Fandabedodgy · 02/05/2023 13:22

Pretty normal practice

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 02/05/2023 13:22

It's normal - they still have to pay their staff.

Nurseries that don't openly charge for them will be making the money back elsewhere.

AlienSupaStar · 02/05/2023 13:22

I think you need to go back to your contract.

If fees are averaged then the nursery’s costs will also be the same - they can’t just not pay staff because of a bank holiday.

:-(

DailyMailHater · 02/05/2023 13:22

Been a whilst since mine was in nursery but remember this being pretty standard practice at all the ones we looked at when we were looking.

Wenfy · 02/05/2023 13:22

I think most nurseries and private schools charge for bank holidays - as staff still need to be paid

Skinnermarink · 02/05/2023 13:23

Yeah it’s entirely normal. We pay through the nose for nursery but that doesn’t trickle down to the floor staff, and I don’t begrudge them a paid day off, since I get one too.

Hogi · 02/05/2023 13:23

Childminders also charge for bank holidays.

You'd still want paying from your work wouldn't you? Standard practice.

GoodChat · 02/05/2023 13:25

Our nursery doesn't charge for bank holidays. On our invoice it tells you the months cost then the day rates removed.

Moraxella · 02/05/2023 13:26

Yep standard. Even more of a ballache when you work most of them and can’t find extra childcare 😫

Ponderingwindow · 02/05/2023 13:30

normal
we paid the same every month based on our contracted days, regardless of how many holidays there might be. We also live in an area where there could be closures for inclement weather and we didn’t get refunds for those either.

mindutopia · 02/05/2023 13:34

Yes, it’s normal. I get paid to not work so I think it’s fair that they do too. Dh, on the other hand, runs a business where he is not making any money on a bank holiday (as they’re closed and all employees have the day off as they should). But he needs to still pay them despite no money coming in.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 02/05/2023 13:35

Yes- staff still get paid. If you sign up for part time, makes sense not to sign up for Mondays

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 02/05/2023 13:36

They'll still charge, it's just the costs will be part of the standard daily rate rather than you paying specifically for the bank holidays.

Paying staff for BH's is just a standard business cost, unfortunately!

Mine doesn’t. Depends on the contract

JollyJellyCat · 02/05/2023 13:37

Yes really common.

I can't think of any other services that do this though - my cleaners (through a company) don't clean on a bank holiday, nor do other services (that I don't use) like gardeners, dog walkers, and they don't charge . . .

Anniessong · 02/05/2023 13:39

Thanks everyone. I hadn’t expected to be charged for days that I can’t use and, naively, expected the nursery to pay their staff for bank holidays as other businesses would. But it seems normal practice and there isn’t anything I can do about it so will pipe down! I’m fortunate at least that my partner and I don’t work BH and don’t have to fund an extra day of childcare so I really do feel for those in that position

Normal but very annoying! I'd much rather it be rolled into the regular charge so it doesn't unfairly affect people using the nursery on Monday rather than other days.

TheGoogleMum · 02/05/2023 13:40

Most of them do this, yes it's very annoying. Why should families that attend Mondays pay disproportionately more for childcare? To pay staff for the bank holiday they ought to factor in to everyone's payments rather than making Monday parents pay. Especially annoying if you might need to work on the bank holidays so are paying but don't have the needed childcare! It would be fair enough if they were open.

There are a few nurseries that don't charge but not many!

Danikm151 · 02/05/2023 13:40

It’s really frustrating but it’s standard.
you pay for a service, they’re not providing so the logic would be that you don’t pay but they still charge!

I get they have costs but that should be budgeted for

I didn’t say that nursery staff shouldn’t be paid for BH?

Comefromaway · 02/05/2023 13:44

We never paid for bank holidays or the two weeks at Christmas the nursery was closed.
