To turn off their Alexa?

Neighbour has an Alexa and they use it to set alarms (I’m guessing from the noise, could be calls, but I think they’re alarms). The alarms go off two or three times a day, not an issue at all. However, they regularly go out and forget to turn the alarms off. This means, I’ll be working from home and the Alexa alarm will start, and there’s no one in so it just keeps ringing, over and over and over. It probably only lasts for five minutes, but it’s that noise constantly for five minutes, several times a day and I’m now hyper aware of it. I know they’re not in, we have a shared drive. Would I be unreasonable to shout and see if I can stop the alarm noise from my house? I wouldn’t turn the alarm off. Just shut it up, and only when they’re not in? Or is that just insane?

You should definitely try this and report back. Unless there is an open window you can shout through, I'll be impressed if it works. But if it does there is all sorts of mischief you could get up to!

Toomanylatenightprogs · 02/05/2023 12:55

Shout through their letterbox ?

Daffydills · 02/05/2023 13:21

I’m hoping that if I can hear it this clearly, then it’ll be able to hear me when I shout? But I’m worried it’s odd and a bit invasive, and they’re decent neighbours so I wouldn’t want to cause any issues with them

Just shout "Alexa Stop".

However Alexa records all the voice instructions it receives on its app so they could be looking at the voice history and then listen back to you shouting "Alexa Stop".

Probably just best to ask them if you can do that if you are friendly.

Lcb123 · 02/05/2023 13:40

If you are friendly, just ask them as they might not even be aware? I hate Alexas and similar for this reason and many others, I'd never have one.

Daffydills · 02/05/2023 13:44

I keep meaning to mention it when I see them, but haven’t seen them or haven’t remembered when I have. I wouldn’t want my voice shouting to be recorded!

NDN dog shuts up when I shout through the wall. You'd think Alexa would be cleverer than a dog 🤔

VainAbigail · 02/05/2023 14:30

You know for sure it’s an Amazon device that answers to Alexa?

mrsm43s · 02/05/2023 14:35

Given that Alexa can be controlled remotely by the app on people's phones, I'd just drop them a text when it happens and ask them if they'd mind switching it off remotely.

This is polite, and makes the point that their alarm going off disturbs you, so hopefully will encourage them to turn it off before they go out in the future.

Daffydills · 02/05/2023 15:32

@VainAbigail definitely, I don’t have one, but I recognise the sound

@mrsm43s I don’t have their number, we aren’t that close. It’s why I’ve been trying to randomly bump into them :)

Just shout and see what happens. I wouldn't think twice.

VainAbigail · 02/05/2023 16:19

definitely, I don’t have one, but I recognise the sound

Then go for it and try. Not all my Amazon devices answer to Alexa though, hence asking. But if it works, bonus!

Undethetree · 02/05/2023 16:40

Put a note through their door?!!!

Topseyt123 · 02/05/2023 16:44

I'd give it a try.

peplepue · 02/05/2023 16:44

Alternative names instead of Alexa are, ziggy and Echo I think

AgnesX · 02/05/2023 17:10

My Alexa won't start when I ask it too from a distance of 5 ft🙄

Good luck!

AgnesX · 02/05/2023 17:11

To not too🥴

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 02/05/2023 17:25

It may also be an idea to try other wake words.
Amazon
Echo
Ziggy
And computer.

Daffydills · 02/05/2023 19:23

Ok thanks. If/when it goes off tomorrow I’ll try all the names and see what happens
