AIBU to think if you're not asking a question you shouldn't end your sentence with a question mark?

I see this more and more in online forums and even in teams chats etc at work and it just comes across as stroppy and passagg. If your intention is to invite agreement or disagreement, say so. If you're stating your opinion, a full stop will suffice. But these question marks everywhere do no one any favours. Own your opinion, or don't express it at all.

It depends. Sometimes a question mark can make a statement seem less aggressive

Huria · 02/05/2023 01:38

Kind of mealy mouthed though I think. It's almost like a disclaimer - the equivalent of saying 'im not trying to be funny but….'

Also, it's just unclear. Are you asking me or telling me? Commit!

I think sometimes it can be a good indicator of tone? 😝

or just expressing doubt/uncertainty in a statement 🤷🏻‍♀️

¡Prefiero la manera española!
¿y tú?

larkstar · 02/05/2023 02:25

Am I the only person using the interrobang!?

Huria · 02/05/2023 02:37

Yes but tone indicating what? Could range between anything from 'god you thick bitch I can't believe I'm having to say this' to 'i don't know but I'll obfuscate '. It's just annoying.

YANBU. Although sometimes it might be more of a rhetorical question or implying a thought

Woopzies · 02/05/2023 02:57

I don't know what the problem is? You seem to be labouring under the misapprehension that online forums are some sort of grammar exam? I think you might benefit from taking a chill pill?

Sorry - I got bored. I totally agree. 😅

Sprogonthetyne · 02/05/2023 04:11

I sometimes use them to mean 'i think this is the case but could be wrong, so please confirm'. I might say "as you work thrusday(??), let's meet on Friday insted"

I hate getting emails that start:
Dear Dappled,

I hope you are well?

Do you? If so, why the question mark? It is a statement that you hope the other person is well, it isn't a question. Called someone up on that once and he said he thought it looked more polite. Weird.

Florissant · 02/05/2023 07:16

YANBU.

Doingmybest12 · 02/05/2023 07:25

I use it to try to express a tone of -I am expressing my opinion but understand you may not agree or to ask a genuine question. I think more than one ? Can look a bit demanding.
