Moth balls

RocketIceLollie · 01/05/2023 23:02

Rolled up newspaper?

drinkingcream · 01/05/2023 23:02

They are toxic aren't they? I'd be breathing the chemicals in

I want to kill the moths not myself!

I take it they are definitely clothes moths and not regular moths?

Zero In spray worked for us but it took quite a lot of constant vigilance - on more than one occasion I leapt up from the sofa crying "little bastard" and chasing one with an aerosol.

A year down the line and I'm still living in fear of finding one of the little bastards.

Are you sure they're brown shouldered clothes moths? Most moths don't eat clothes at all...

I've put the bathroom light on, and opened the window as a low maintenance moth trap so I can attract and record the ones that come...

This is a Water Carpet moth that was in the shed today... They're beautiful. Like night time butterflies. There are yellow ones, green ones, pink ones, such intricate patterns.

Get Moth Killing spray, spray it on lengths of brown paper (outside if you prefer)
Then place the paper wherever your moth problem is. Eg in the cupboard/drawer.

Don't worry about the chemicals they're designed to kill moths not humans.

And no moth balls aren't harmful to humans.

First bag up all your woolies and put them in the freezer. Wash everything else and check for maggots, cocoons.
Buy some moth killer spray from amazon and spray everything: wardrobe, drawers, rugs, curtains. Buy some killer cartridges and papers and tuck them into all your clothes and drawers.
This is what I did to get rid after ten years of moth balls, herb repellants, cedar wood disks, moth traps etc, wardrobe living semi permanently in the freezer, throwing out chewed up knitting wool , endlessly mending holes in clothes.
I have that hate too. Nuke ‘em.

A moth ball won't kill you.

that is a beautiful moth however I know the misery of fecking clothes moths. We've had them for about 5 years now more or less. Keep thinking we've got rid of them and then I find a fucker on the staircase.
We have woolen rugs and wool runners on the staircases. I know they there in there.

Evil bastards..ruined silk scarves and lots of cashmere. They have expensive tastes.
Please don't kill the beautiful moths. They are much needed and not harmful at all.
These evil fuckers are tiny and look very insignificant.

78thcat · 01/05/2023 23:12

I've got a zero tolerance policy for the clothes moths if I see any. We had an infestation in my last flat and it was a nightmare. I've spotted one in the past week and I killed it straight away.
For any other type of moth I catch it in a glass and put it outside.

Yes yes they deserve death of the highest order

JMSA · 01/05/2023 23:19

Moths repulse me but butterflies do not. Actually, I'm not mad on either. But butterflies don't provoke the same feeling of dislike.

Beamur · 01/05/2023 23:25

Vigilance.
Vacuuming..
Checking undisturbed areas frequently.
Throw away any wicker or baskets. Or at least empty and vacuum the gaps.
If they can't find your cashmere they eat anything organic. I found an infestation in the bird food.
Sticky traps in all wardrobes. Spray cans of moth killer to hand. Kill on sight.
We used to have a pretty serious problem - thanks to old rugs especially. Much better now, just the occasional moth.

MuchTooTired · 01/05/2023 23:32

Parasitic wasps were the only thing that got rid of our infestation. Not terribly cheap, but extremely effective!

I bought them from dragonfli I think.

neveradullmoment99 · 01/05/2023 23:53

Feeling your pain. I thought I got rid but found a hole in my tee and now I'm thinking they are back. It's war tomorrow.
I had a major infestation during lockdown. They were in my chest of drawers and eating my wool carpet.
I hate them with a passion and kill on sight.

thinkfast · 01/05/2023 23:54

Parasitic wasps are the best remedy for this.

SOMumm · 02/05/2023 04:56

French supermarkets, agricultural Co-ops or Bricomarche type diy stores sell moth killer in different forms, far more effective than what we are able to buy here, including bombes.
We have had a serious infestation, used sticky traps, hooked them onto the curtain poles, behind the curtains, full by morning!
Apparently it is the larvae which munch, tiny but voracious.

PresidentWilson · 02/05/2023 06:48

These were an unwelcome surprise on moving into our new home. Wool carpets being the issue. Carpet was crawling with the larvae and telltale bald circles all over the place. Had to rip up an entire room treat the floors and get a new carpet laid before moving in, and treat the rest with the powder. I also got those bug bomb/foggers and did each room and cupboard affected. Lots of the hangers and balls in all the wardrobes and drawers.

Seemed to work well last year and we didn't have further issues, but in recent weeks, since it's warming up, I've seen the odd fucker appear and killed on sight. Suspect they are back in a little used storage cupboard. Going to look up some of these other suggestions to nuke them. And do another bug bomb in there when the kids are at school.
