To wonder if people who deliver food really are insured?

Recently reading in my local paper about drivers who are delivering food, causing havoc by parking in places they shouldn't do because they want to deliver food.
Question is are they all really insured to do the job? You have to tell your insurance company if your a delivery driver!
Has anyone ever thought if you are involved in an accident with one, and they are not insured?

Do they have to prove insurance before they take on the job? Pondering.

There are lots of people driving with food on board for customers are they all insured properly and what happens if they aren't and involved in a collision?

I was in an accident caused by a delivery driver. He was not adequately insured for business.

His personal insurance paid out for my repairs though. I'm not sure if he'd have got his repairs and whether he'd struggle to get insurance in the future.

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 01/05/2023 12:07

Not sure if they are insured but the way they drive round here I doubt they have a licence! Had one overtake me on a mini island!

BadgerFacedCoo · 01/05/2023 12:07

Sorry can't edit.

The company he delivered for were no help. Didn't care he wasn't insured and said it was nothing to do with them that he'd caused an accident whilst working for them. Seems no checks are done.

Is there any way of finding out?

Don’t order a delivery?

DriedFlowersLiveForever · 01/05/2023 12:28

Go and pick your food up if it concerns you so much?
Do you have any idea how much these people (don't) get paid....most rely on tips to make any kind of gains.
It might not be right but I can't blame them for cutting corners!

Not sure what you mean.
I don't order food myself. I never said I used them.

There is something to be concerned about here though if they are involved in an accident and not insured?

The Op has not said that she is concerned about the person delivering food to her, she is commenting that anyone driving about delivering food might not be insured. You could have a crash with one of these people tomorrow. Whether or not you have ever used their service!

Crikeyohreilly · 01/05/2023 12:33

How do you know anyone you encounter is insured? If it worries you then don’t use them and collect your deliveries.

Exactly. People not reading as usual

I don't order food.
The problem is still there. Are they insured?

I think there are thousands of uninsured/ incorrectly insured drivers in tge road, any reason these ones in particular bother you?

rattymol · 01/05/2023 12:37

The drivers are legally self employed. So most places do not check their insurance. Given how little they are paid, many won't be able to afford extra insurance.

gemsgv · 01/05/2023 12:37

I've seen scooters with 'L' plates on picking up food deliveries and thought the same thing

Yes because they are parking in places they shouldn't be and causing havoc to pick up their orders.

Don't do the job then, nobody's forcing them.

DownNative · 01/05/2023 12:42

Depends on what kind of food delivery drivers you're talking about.

Supermarket home shopping delivery drivers?

The supermarkets have drivers on their own insurance and the store pays for that insurance. These drivers do not use their own private insurance to do their job.

Takeaway delivery drivers? Probably the driver's own private insurance, but it's that driver's responsibility to then ensure it's appropriate for the job they're doing.

Couriers?

Those require specialist insurance, so cannot use private insurance for this purpose.

L1ttledrummergirl · 01/05/2023 13:10

My friends ds did this for a while. He was fully insured but a computer glitch wasn't showing it so he was pulled over by a police officer who tried to fine him.

As this was late at night, he couldn't speak to the insurance company until the next day, when he did they confirmed the insurance was correct. He spoke to a different officer who was happy that documents were in order, so all was good, until the original officer called him and told him that he hoped he had learned from this and ensure he was correctly identified on the police system next time.

When I worked for a pizza chain doing deliveries we had to have the right category on our car insurance. Had to submit our insurance certificate every year.

Why do you intend to do, check every delivery driver you see for their insurance?

megletthesecond · 01/05/2023 13:14

Yanbu. Round here they always have L plates and drive appallingly. I reckon there's a loop hole that means they don't have to pass their tests. One driver has had L plates for over 3 years.
I've lost my shit with several moped drivers who drive on our footpaths and reported them to the police.

Generally, the lack of business use cover will mean that damage to the delivery driver's vehicle is not covered if there is an accident. They will also struggle to make a claim against anyone else if the other party were at fault as the insurance company will not be interested (assuming of course that it was declared that the trip was business use anyway). The "third-party liability" aspect of all the different types of policy should be valid and cover damage to anyone else (or their property).
As a different example, if you have an accident with someone who is on their way to work at an office and they only have SDP cover (social, domestic and pleasure) as opposed to SDP + Commuting, they would not be covered for themselves but their third party liability is still there so the other car gets repaired. What can we do? Check everyone's cover as we're driving along? Does that even make a difference? The much bigger concern are the people who are driving without any cover at all!

Don't think whether or not they specifically have business cover makes any difference to "parking in places they shouldn't be and causing havoc to pick up their orders". No amount of insurance is going to change that.

ScottBakula · 01/05/2023 13:30

There are probably 1000s of incorrectly drivers on the tiads but I agree with @girlfriend44 , food delivery drivers ( the type that deliver mostly take aways ) its the inconsiderate and dangerous parking that is annoying. I live near quite a few take aways and regularly see them parking two abreast on a very busy road so cars have to go onto the opposite side of the road to get past them . We get a lot of buses and wagons on that road and if there is a car (legally ) parked across the road from the muppets the bus/wagon can't get past .

I also see them stopping two abreast on tram tracks causing traffic chaos. If I was a tram driver i would really want to 'nudge' the car * *out of the way .

Allywill · 28/09/2023 13:51

Do you mean deliveroo drivers and the like? I believe they are considered self employed so it’s up to them to have the correct insurance in place not the company and in any case certainly not the restaurant or takeaway they are delivering food for. Even the ones who work directly for domino's have been determined to be self employed contractors

egowise · 28/09/2023 14:03

This is why many sign up as bike riders, as Uber and deliveroo request insurance for cars.

So I was told, anyway.
