Party walls

AIBU - live in a terrace house old late 19th century brick. Old neighbours were fab - new neighbours are a selfish couple early 30ss whose idea of life in close proximity to neighbours is not compatible with any form of peace.

Think banging , drilling, sawing etc at any hour, day or night - think nothing of coming home from work and starting driling at 1930 or later.

For the last few weeks, they have been a little more subtle but there is undoubtedly work being done on the party wall between our properties. I know basic electrics etc hanging shelves etc can be done.

However, there is now a pile of obvious bricks appearing in a waste bag outside the house. The plaster in my front room is now cracked. I fear they re removing bricks from the party wall - fits with the noises I hear.

Do I have the right to ask them what they re doing or am I being unreaosnable

I would take photos of the damage and go around and ask them what they’re doing

Absolutely not unreasonable. I would take photographic evidence and video evidence when the drilling/other loud noises are going on and then go round and demand to know what is happening and threaten a phone call to the police if necessary.

@Keyan you've changed your tune haven't you? It's only a few bricks, they shouldn't be ànnoyed at someone having fun should they?

We had a long running party wall dispute with our neighbour which started with them demolishing a shared wall without notice leaving our roof space open to the elements. If they have done any structural work to the wall without a party wall agreement in place they have broken the law. Work needs to stop immediately whilst you both engage the services of a surveyor - the other side pays all your costs. Our neighbours ended up paying for 5 professionals (surveyor and structural engineer for both sides plus an adjudicator) and it delayed their build for months, plus they had to pay for repair of damage to our property. Surveyor will read them the riot act. So firstly go and ask what’s going on but if they have done anything structural make sure you get professional advice immediately.
