Taking children into appropriate toilets

I don’t know where the idea of men’s toilets all being filthy stinking places filled with creepy perverts comes from
l can only speak from my own experience but I’ve never seen puddles of urine all over the floor ( sprinkles near urinals occasionally). I’ve never seen any creepy perverts; I’ve never seen a penis even.
If a toilet smells it has not been cleaned properly or often enough.
Most of those I’ve used have been odourless and reasonably clean, used by decent blokes as decently as possible. I’ve no hesitation in taking my young g/daughters into a gents toilet in the gym I go to, in supermarkets , shopping malls motorway cafes restaurants etc. I can see no reason whatever for a man to be in a ladies loo on the pretext of having a child with him.

I don’t see any reason for a man to be in the female toilets on the pretext of having a child either but you have been exceptionally sheltered and wrong about the state of some public toilets.

No, I thought the idea with toilets and changing rooms was to follow the sex of the adult. Boys with adult women into the women's and girls with adult men into the men's, in the absence of other options.

ThankYouMama · 30/04/2023 19:59

Ok, fair enough.

But you should not be taking your young granddaughters into the males toilets, I can only assume that the majority of men use urinals, I don't believe your young granddaughters or any girl child should be exposed to seeing that.

People are weird.

Is that what it is?! Who knew! Thank you random man!

My issue is not supervised girls in the men’s toilets in the kind of places DH is likely to take our daughter alone (restaurant, soft play, supermarket etc. Perfectly ok with that and our daughter has never been uncomfortable with it.

My issue is the number of women who apparently think I should send my neurodivergent eight year old boy into men’s toilets alone instead of him coming into the ladies with me. Including at for example a major railway station or motorway services. I don’t actually think there’s a huge risk or a abuser lurking in every men’s toilets but I wouldn’t let him out of my sight in a crowd of total strangers in any other circumstance so why on earth would I under these.

I agree though that there is no reason for a man to be in the ladies, that’s ridiculous.

Mine is ten I'm getting away with it at the moment because he is tiny but he is growing he is on HRC for dla though so we will have to use disabled toilets before long im fortunate enough to have his older brother with me sometimes who will take him for me but who would have thought toilets would be such an issue

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 30/04/2023 20:11

Thanks for mansplaining toilets to us women folk

TeaKitten · 30/04/2023 20:14

Which toilets do none clean or decent blokes use then? And do they seriously never use motorway toilets?! Bullshit.

Weird post.

Yeah, we’re really at the point of having to use disabled toilets, I’m going to have to get a RADAR key I think. I think eight is too young for people to flap about boys in the ladies but obviously once he reaches puberty it’s just not going to be appropriate. He’s ok to use mens toilets if it’s somewhere very small which just has one self contained room/cubicle for each sex (like some restaurants), but somewhere with multiple stalls/urinals or is busy, no way.

I do wish larger places (like motorway services) would have “family toilets” like Debenhams used to have. They were so useful.

Soapboxqueen · 30/04/2023 20:22

I agree OP.

One too many threads explaining why men should be allowed in the women's loos because they have a daughter with them.

I can't even comment on them because they are infuriating.

Somewhere between 8 and 10 children should start going to the toilet by themselves and not with the other sex parent.

I stopped taking my ds in at around that age and got a RADAR key instead as he has additional needs. Cue the rolling of eyes from staff/public because we don't look disabled.

Men's toilets are filthy, stinking places.

I was a cleaner for many years and the amount of puddles of piss, shitty boxers, condoms and bottles filled with piss, shit all over floors and cubicles, shit smeared on mirrors, shit in the urinals and much, much more that I had to deal with in a daily basis was unreal.

There are also perverts in there, at least once every 3 months I was flashed at or stopped from getting out. Thank fuck I had an alarm system to alert someone.

But no, men shouldn't be in the ladies toilets at all. I wouldn't want my daughters in the men's either.

So if a father takes his young daughter our, what is he to do?

YunaBalloon · 30/04/2023 21:02

Totally agree OP.

I used to go in to the men's with my dad, and I do remember it, and I'm not scarred by it!

So if a father takes his young daughter our, what is he to do?

If a father is taking his daughters out then its up to him to plan the day around what he is comfortable with, just as I do.

A man would be infinitely less likely to harass a girl in there with her dad than a woman in there on her own ime. It's not something I would be happy about for my daughters but another family may be comfortable with it.

AnnaKorine · 30/04/2023 21:30

The amount of men I see in women’s toilets with little girls is unreal. DH always takes DD into the mens, I’m comfortable he can protect her from whatever dangers there might be and now at 7 she is quite capable of going into the ladies alone whilst he waits at the door for her. I also have a young DS though and at 5 I always take him into the ladies with me but he often wants to go to the men’s alone. For now I say no but I have to admit the idea of sending him in there alone in the not to distant future makes me feel a bit weird.

Blessedbethefruitz · 30/04/2023 21:42

Don't all parents take their young kids into the parent sex toilet? We live by the sea and use a lot of public toilets while out, ive never seen a man in the ladies! My 4 yo son goes to the ladies with me and the mens with dh. When baby girl is out of nappies, it will be no different.

Of course during the nappy stage it was a problem as baby change areas are largely in the ladies (here at least) - m&s in the middle of our town thankfully has dedicated baby change rooms with no toilets, so dh could change ds there without having to stick him on a toilet floor, which is a bit gross.
