Up your earning potential?

I always see posts in replies from people telling others that the best way to get ahead is to focus on upping your earning potential

  • what does everyone mean by this?
Is it as easy as learning new qualifications, which ones do you do? How do you know what to do?

I think my only option is to focus on trying to up earning potential. Currently on a 40k salary (contract job which took me from prev salary of 23k up to this, will finish in Sept and likely won't get into a similar role in my area so looking at dropping back down in salary). I'd like to continue on at same sort of salary but feel I maybe need more qualifications. Totally unsure where to go

My direct line is a Project Information Manager and her role is something that really interests me however I have no idea how to qualify for that (I do plan to ask her when I next have the time/see her but may be another couple of weeks)

You can do online courses in just about anything these days, you just have to exercise a bit of judgement in choosing relevant, recognised qualifications.

I have no idea either. It is easy to say do something to up your earning potential. But if it’s that easy, then no one would be doing a NMW job, would they? Not all qualifications lead to higher paying jobs. There are also jobs I don’t want to do (only fans, influencers) and I am sure we all have red lines.

I have a friend with two (relevant) masters degrees who is earning a pittance as a library assistant. So I wouldn't always say qualifications are linked to increased earning potential.

It's not all about qualifications I don't have any, I'm studying for CISSP at the moment, but more for me than anything else.

It's about making it known to your management that you want progression, asking for additional experience/responsibilities and developing your own skills.

I've got from a call centre agent doing telemarketing to Director of Info Sec in a Global organisation by applying for jobs that interest me, taking on whatever challenges presented themselves or I could find and getting known by the higher ups for doing a good job.
