About the bloody rain

I KNOW I am being unreasonable as with UK holidays you take the risk with the weather.

But I am sooo disappointed. Likely to be the only week away we get this year after a couple of really crap years and it looks like it is raining all week from next weekend (going to Cornwall).

I'm trying to get out of this funk because I know it is what you make of it but we were hoping to at least be able to sit on the beach for an afternoon/morning. Maybe have a bbq.

But the whole week genuinely looks a wash out now and I just can't lift my spirits about it.

Any ideas for making Cornwall fun in the rain? Or should I cut my losses and save the money I was going to take for spending money and try somewhere else over the summer.

Thank you!

The only way we manage rainy UK breaks is to have an activity every day. Is there enough in the local area that interests you? Also, would the cost of that be throwing good money after bad? A lot depends on what your family enjoys. Mine were luckily happy enough with a few more expensive attractions interspersed with some cheaper days at NT properties, beach walks etc. However if there's not enough to be able to plan affordable activity for a full week, I'd be hesitant, as mooching around the accommodation or watching the rain from a cafe window isn't much fun.

Whereabouts in Cornwall?

Perranporth

This is what I am worried about, that it is going to end up costing a lot because we will have to do a lot of expensive activities every day now as it looks like it's raining every day, when we could cut our losses on the accommodation and maybe put the spending money towards trying again somewhere in the coming months.

I appreciate we are fortunate to be going away at all and there are bigger things in the world but I can't help but feel disappointed that it is rain every single day we are there.

Wow that really sucks!

I'd sit down and cost out a plan for daily activities and see what it looks like. I know some people will say you can make the best of it on the cheap, with walks in the rain and board games/hot chocolate/snuggles/books, but that wouldn't be every family's idea of a holiday.

CheshireDing · 30/04/2023 11:19

is the surf school open yet ? If so I would sign up for that if you haven’t already

A meal at the Watering Hole too

Cornwall Gold is worth a visit and it’s only 10 mins away, it’s free and it also has pottery painting on site (which you pay for)

Couscousmoose · 30/04/2023 11:24

re-enact Coldplays Yellow on the beach in the rain. invest in raincoats and rain suits for the kids and enjoy with wellies. I used to love going out in the rain as a kid, but if drying the clothes is an issue and you're camping maybe save it for the last day.
Bring a thermos and tea. I know its rubbish but there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.

Yup I'm off to Portugal and it's looking the same Sad. Really tempted to cut our losses and lose the flight money, but save the accommodation/spending money we haven't spent yet.

Actually, no. The weather is shit whatever you're wearing.

Mangolist · 30/04/2023 11:27

We're off to Portugal, and it looks gorgeous! It is on the very Eastern algarve, though, so maybe we're lucky

Ah we are off to Porto and surrounding areas, rain everyday from Wednesday!

Mangolist · 30/04/2023 11:31

Oh boo, I'm sorry. You did have me panicked for a minute!

FrownedUpon · 30/04/2023 11:45

I’d cancel if you can. A rainy week in Cornwall is not fun.

BlueKaftan · 30/04/2023 11:47

I agree to cancel if you can. This spring has been cold and soggy enough without having to go on holiday and have the same weather.

BloodyRain · 30/04/2023 11:50

I feel guilty even moaning as i know it's nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Just hoping maybe the forecast will cheer up a bit.

Seriously considering cancelling - I have 3 under 5 too which I just think all of them stuck in a caravan whilst it's raining = hell on earth.

Honestly, just go. If you look closely at the forecast it says there is a small chance of rain most days but that doesn't mean it will rain all day every day. You will probably be surprised by how little rain you have. I say this as an inveterate weather watcher. I am often surprised by how little it actually rains compared with what is forecast.

I am not even bothered if it is sunny or not, I just don't want to be stuck in a caravan for 7 days!

thank you - that gives a bit of a lift
