To ask how to stop neighbour's cat coming into our house...

A neighbour's cat has been in our house a few times, and hangs around our garden a lot. It's entered through an open window, as well as an open back door. We have a dog, and we like to leave the door open for her when the weather is nice so she can come in and out the house as she likes.

Our dog doesn't like cats. Yesterday the cat came into the house and went upstairs and into bedrooms, luckily our dog was shut up in the kitchen at the time.

Is there anyway to stop the cat from coming into our house? Obviously as the weather gets nicer windows and doors will be open more often. I thought the cat would somehow know there was a dog in the house and to stay away but evidently not!

Don't leave the dog shut in the kitchen? 😉

Most people go with the super soaker option. I wouldn't mind my cat getting wet if he was being a nuisance.

GoldenGorilla · 30/04/2023 09:07

Anytime you see the cat pick it up and take it outside, eventually it will learn not to come in to you.

Get a super soaker and spray the cat every time you see it in your garden

I agree with letting the cat see that there's a dog that doesn't like cats. But some cats will get into a standoff with a dog.

Citrus peel on the windowsill. Cats just go wherever the hell they like and need to be actively discouraged! If you catch him trying to come in flick water at him to put him off!

Shut your door and windows? You really shouldn't be leaving your door open in summer lots of burglaries happen that way.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 30/04/2023 09:11

Why are your doors open for the dog when they are shut up in the kitchen? Leave your dog free and he will literally chase your problem away for you

Is it a new cat or neighbours?

When we moved to a terrace our neighbours 3 cats took it in turns to come in and check it over. We also had a dog. Once they’d done their Neighbourhood Watch thing they stopped coming. Cats have a need to explore their ‘territory’,
even if it’s inside your house.

Its possible when the cat has checked all the rooms it will stop coming in.

Otherwise a plant mister. Or let the dog have freedom of the house for the time being.

Neighbours new young cat from used to make a beeline for my daughters front door whenever anyone was going in or out and then shoot of upstairs. It was friendly enough but honestly a real pain. A spray bottle of water kept by the front door and used everytime sorted the issue within a week. It still comes on the drive to say hello, so no hard feelings, but never crosses the threshold.

Our neighbours cat did this. Neighbour gave us full permission to chuck some water at it whenever it came in and it soon got the hint. It still comes in our garden but never the house e

That's how we got our cat. :) He was an older boy, who came from a family with 3 young noisy boys. He came to ours for a bit of peace and quiet!

In the end, that family moved away, and asked if we'd like to keep him. Which we did.

As for keeping them away, a spray bottle does the trick. Or a short, sharp "AH!" with a hand clap scares them off.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 29/08/2023 06:53

seconding the spray bottle with water suggestion.

Making sudden and loud noises (rattling a can with loose change or pebbles) when the cat shows up can work as well.
