Polyester clothes

Is it just me that can't stand polyester?

For some reason I always buy cotton clothes, annoying that they require ironing but my skin somehow hates polyester, also when you sweat in it it's dreadful.

No, me too. Can't wear it or even sleep on polycotton

Emotionalstorm · 29/04/2023 22:22

I don't like polyester either. I stick to linen, silk, cotton where possible. I do buy synthetic sports clothing from Lululemon and Arcteryx though. It's a guilty pleasure.

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/04/2023 22:24

A big nope from me too. Can’t wear it - just far too sweaty (thank you menopause!) I stick to linen, cotton, silk, etc

Alittlestar · 29/04/2023 22:26

I can't stand it either, horrible material.

AuntieStella · 29/04/2023 22:30

I've always found it too sweaty for most clothing

(the main exception is wicking performance sports clothes, but these days, bamboo is a better choice for much of that)

Siameasy · 29/04/2023 23:08

I frigging hate microfibre although I will grant that it’s good at soaking up water eg as a hair towel. But I hate to even touch it.

As for clothing, generally yes polyester has a cheap look and feel but it has its uses in certain garments where cotton wouldn’t work.

I find viscose really cool actually. Cotton can be quite drying. I use a silk pillowcase these days. Recommend for hot older women wrong side of 40

pictoosh · 29/04/2023 23:10

Yanbu. Awful stuff.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 29/04/2023 23:10

It can be so disappointing when you see clothing or bedding that looks lovely then realise it's polyester. Especially summer items. Who wants to wear nasty sweaty polyester in summer?

FrenchBoule · 29/04/2023 23:47

Not just you.
I can’t stand it. It’s clinging to my skin and after a while I start stinking.
Linen is best for the summer

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 30/04/2023 00:58

Not just you ... I really don't want my body to be wrapped in plastic.

I can't stand it.

AuntieStella · 30/04/2023 07:06

If it's recommended for the older age group under 40 (the "wrong" side) surely it would be good for all ages?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 30/04/2023 07:07

Nobody likes it - it is horrible.

Maireas · 30/04/2023 07:22

Horrible. The look, the feel, the sweatiness! I am always disappointed to see what initially looks like a nice summer dress only to find on closer inspection it's polyester. I wear cotton and linen in the summer, wool in the winter.

IfICouldIStillWouldNot · 30/04/2023 07:41

It's horrible - cheap and uncomfortable.

Giggorata · 30/04/2023 07:44

So many times I see a nice looking garment online and click it to find the material is bloody polyester.
The shops and manufacturers don't seem to listen. Who actually does like it?

I agree about viscose @Siameasy. It at least breathes and it hangs and dyes well.
It begins life as a natural product from wood pulp, which is then chemically treated. Apparently, they are now using a less drastic and more eco friendly process to make it these days.

yomellamoHelly · 30/04/2023 08:10

Nope - Cling in the wrong ways as soon as you heat up.

Iambouddicca · 30/04/2023 08:15

YANBU. It’s a nightmare for kids clothes as well. Even jeans are polyester mix these days. DC2 has eczema and reacts really badly to polyester. I am on a constant hunt for the very basics like PJs and joggers they can wear. School uniform is a pain in the arse.

TroysMammy · 30/04/2023 08:36

Our work tops are made from polyester and we love them. After washing hang up, quick to dry, no ironing. I wouldn't buy polyester clothes to wear outside work though.

Maireas · 30/04/2023 08:38

I think if you don't wear polyester, you have to iron, but that's a whole other thread.....

Deadpalm · 30/04/2023 08:39

I can deal with some mix, but yes. Polyester is terrible. Lucky for me I don't use few of the fast fashion brands who probably have even offices built from it.
Sherpa lining is in most cases polyester and eww. If you want your feet sweat weirdly and smell, sherpa lining in shoes is what you are looking for😳

M&S does nice cotton tshirts and when on sale, they are actually solid price. I order socks from my native country😂

SugarAndSpiceIsNice · 30/04/2023 08:40

Me too. Only natural fibres for me. Can't even tolerate a blend.

Deadpalm · 30/04/2023 08:40

Depends how you hang it ime. We have quite a lot of cotton and viscose and such and it's a good workout to shake it REALLY well before hanging.

AuntieJune · 30/04/2023 08:43

I love a bit of crimplene!

YANBU. I don't wear polyester and won't buy home furnishings that have it, either.
